I have spent a few late nights this week writing a postmortem on my latest iPhone iPad title Bugfest. You can read it on my website at http://www.fatalfrog.com/?p=25.
Feel free to leave questions, comments and suggestions! I hope you enjoy the read and find something useful for you.
Really good read, very informative, so thankyou for taking the time to contribute a postmortem. The art looks really nice, comparable to the looks and style of other great titles like Cut the Rope etc.
I’ll be buying the game tonight ready for my son to squash some bugs in the morning ^^ I’m sure I’ll also try accomplish the achievements built into Game Centre =P
@Spk how was it decided to do a bug squashing game? I didn’t realise how many there were until I couldn’t remember your titles name and had to scroll through a huge list with my only search word being “bug”
Also I don’t know how others feel but in any game with a highscore system I like to know exactly how my score it calculated. In Bugfest I can’t seem to figure out how the final score is done so when I’m playing I’m still confused in some cases what’s more important to achieve.
Actually I got the idea while taking a shower I was after something fun, small and simple. I think i had read a small review on a pimple popping game a few days ago, that probably led me there. It wasn’t meant to be a revolutionary game, just a very polished one, and back when I started there were only 2 or 3 bug squishing games out, of mediocre production value, so I gave it a shot.
I agree with your observation on the scoring, I should probably have done it differently. The final menu kinda hints at what matters in the scoring (it stops on each criteria and increases the score). It takes into account several parameters such as time, streaks, overall accuracy, etc… The formula is a bit cryptic, and what matters in the end is your final score once you’re done playing. At least for most people
