So, I’m curious - for those of you out there who have a game/app that sells additional content packs via IAP - do you offer any kind of bundle deals? How effective are they?
To be clear I’m not talking about any consumable IAPs. I mean things like additional levels for your game, for example. Things you buy once and have forever.
I’m working on a project that I foresee will put out regular content pack updates for a while. I’m considering selling the packs individually and in bundles that would be priced slightly cheaper than if they were bought individually. My instinct tells me this is a good idea, but I can’t find any research/experiments online regarding bundling IAPs.
Additionally, since I expect to be making new content for a while, I was considering a “Lifetime Pass” option. This would be an IAP that would actually cost more than the combined cost of all currently available content packs. However, it would grant you access to all current packs and all future packs that will be created. Anybody ever tried something like this before?
Bundles are awesome and people love to feel like they are getting a deal on something. Plus you are locking in revenue that might not happen if they have to hit “purchase” on two separate occasions.
I think the lifetime pass option is a bit of a dud, to be honest. First off, you miss out on the whole “deal” factor (instead actually feeling like a bit of a rip off). And what if you don’t follow through because you promise too much / get bored / quit?
Yeah, I can see how it might feel like a ripoff because there’s no guarantee of anything.
My original thought was to always price it right around the combined cost of the content packs. So, the Lifetime Pass price would be steadily increasing as each new pack was released. I thought that might incentivize “early adopters” because people could potentially get an even better deal than via the bundles if they bought early enough.
For example, say I launch with 3 content packs. I sell them separately for $1 each. I sell a bundle of all 3 for $2. I also sell the Lifetime Pass for $3. Now, let’s say down the road I end up releasing 20 content packs. $3 for all 20 would end up being a tremendous deal for someone that bought into it early on.
