Burping Borborygmic Cat == 1B USD...WTF???

Ummm…why spend years making an MMORPG when you can make a billion with a belching cat. I am truly boggled by these types of behaviors. I could do this cat and all the antics in two days of dev work but never would. Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

Yea… just saw that this morning. Just wow.

I think the right idea is to start taking notes.

It is always the same problem - you, me, and many people could do that, BUT didn’t. Those guys did it and are now cashing out. Such is life, I suppose.

Couple things to note:

  1. This is yet another great example of a small group of developers trying new ideas over and over until they made something that really took off.
  2. It looks like the big money was for the number of users using the app, not for specific technology developed for the app.

If you look at their other apps, they were clearly looking for a money maker (though a bit random). Sorta like flappy bird, iterations on games that are addicting.

I’ve never even heard of Outfit7.

Does anyone know if they use Unity?

A good example of why I often wonder why so many folks here seem to focus on big projects. I think these people wanted to make money so they focused their efforts to that end. Probably a bit of luck (right idea right time) involved but if it wasn’t this silly little app it would have been something else seen as equally “lame” (not that I see it that way).

There is many success that completely fly under the radar because we arent the right culture for it, see episode, it makes millions, nobody talk about it in any dev circle.

Because so many folks don’t want to create content that is described like this;
“Playing Talking Tom triggers an onslaught of advertising and in-game purchase offers”
But the results don’t lie, although reading the entire article makes me feel very skeptical about the way Chinese companies go about manipulating the system. Is that real money, or just virtual valued sums?

Well I wasn’t looking at the ads and iap mainly just that they delivered what people wanted or at least what people appreciated. 350 million monthly users I think would make most any person here incredibly happy.

More just that I think there really is often this huge difference between the kind of games many game devs want to make and the kind of games many people out there actually want (or at least would greatly enjoy once they find it).

It is an entertaining app. How much something appeals to customers defines the success, not the amount of work that went in.

Many developers try this route, so it is a competitive market. You are unlikely to succeed without a good product with a lot of polish. And this has both of them.

FAKE…company had 53 million in profits…someone is lying through there teeth, there is just the small amount of $950,000,000.00 to come from ‘somewhere’…just a small point.

It came from a Chinese chemical company IIRC. My boggling did not come from them as app makers. I am boggled at the number of folks who would download a belching cat app and a company who would think this a suitable mascot to the tune of 1B USD. I think my issue is i was brought up immersed in Renaissance and Enlightenment philosophy and the human in todays modern swivelisation is immersed in their lower fundament.

That’s probably quite accurate. I’ve seen at least a couple of games focused around pooping and they were quite popular too. I think I could understand it more if it was all very young boys who might just find farting and pooping very funny. But I remember seeing some videos on the games by guys in their 20s or older who were just as mesmerized by the poop.

This is the beauty of having a good idea and do something with it :slight_smile:

Same. That said I hadn’t heard of this one until you posted about it. I was too busy being annoyed by these.

No kidding. Several ads claim they are literally a cure for ADHD.

They’re always coming out with stuff like this I think? Like those squeeze balls often found on office desks for stress relief. Always a huge market for band-aids. Temporary surface quick fixes without getting to the root cause. Good for capitalism though because can always make more stuff basically the same with a different name, shape or whatever.
