Announcing - Bushido: Legend of the Samurai (a first person action game, set in Feudal Japan)

Hi, my name is Sam and I’m the Lead Designer at Meteor Pixel. We’re working on a new game called Bushido: Legend of the Samurai, a first-person action game in the vein of Chivalry or Mount and Blade, set during feudal Japan. Bushido is currently 1 year into its development and is, of course, being created using Unity 3D.

If you wanted to see some of our older work, including videos, screenshots and news, please check out our IndieDB profile: http://www.indiedb.com/games/bushido-legend-of-the-samurai.

Updates

22/11/13 - Screenshots from some of our maps
24/11/13 - Screenshots showing some of the weapons from Bushido
27/11/13 - A render of our base character

So what makes Bushido unique?

Bushido has a number of unique elements that sets it apart from other games in the wider genre:

  • Customize your own Samurai
  • Potentially thousands of armor/clothing combinations
  • A unique and challenging combat mechanic (geared towards more hardcore gamers who prefer skill-based combat)
  • Combat is based on a real Japanese Swordsmanship martial art
  • Highly detailed environments, many of which are based on real historical sites in Japan
  • Unlock new weapons/armor by gaining honour (not necessarily kills…)
  • A new and innovative clan/league system

We’ve also got a few ideas for stretch goals, such as customizable dojo’s and player leagues.

What are your plans for development?

We’re currently working towards launching a Kickstarter project in the new year. So far, we’ve invested hundreds if not thousands of man hours into the project. We’d love to be able to work on the game full-time to try and give it the attention it deserves, but to do that we need £££ (all the dev’s current have full-time jobs).

As part of the lead up to our KS, we’re going to try and improve our presence by posting on places like the Unity forums. Hopefully, this’ll not only improve interest in the game but will also give anyone interested in it a chance to voice any ideas/suggestions/concerns.

So, if you’ve got any feedback, we’d love to hear it. Either post them below or visit our IndieDB profile, which we read every day.

Stay tuned for future updates as we’ll be adding new screenshots, Youtube links etc… as we progress.

All the best,
Sam Team Meteor Pixel

Just to get the ball rolling, here are some screenshots of the environments from Bushido. More will follow soon!

The game looks pretty good.

Sorry- I think the URL got shortened somehow… it should be: http://www.indiedb.com/games/bushido-legend-of-the-samurai.

Thanks,

First off the game looks decent, atleast from a graphical standpoint. It will all come down to your gameplay now. Also I am a Game Tester so please let me know if you want me to test it out or give any feedback as the world has been needing a decent Samurai game.

Lastly why is this on the Unity Forum when your video states that it uses UDK?

Awesome I remember seeing this back when it was a mod.
Also, good to see some fellow bristolians on the forum
Keep up the good work!

Ah hehe now i am glad that i didnt pick up japanese inspired project and rather went with ancient one, as it would be pretty much very similar to yours:smile:
Looking forward to see how it develops.

Hi Weak,

Bushido originally started off as Mod for Chivalry, and in its early stages was being developed on the UDK. However, since going standalone (http://www.indiedb.com/games/bushido-legend-of-the-samurai/news/big-news-for-bushido) we decided to move over to Unity as we had used it in the past and think its a great platform!

Thanks for the offer of play testing, why not drop me an email on sam@meteorpixel.com with a list of any games you’ve tested in the past/any experience you might have!

Adrianis- you too  !

The images that I’ve seen look great, but they appear to be way too high-poly to be believed. Are they cut-scene video renders, or are they game play under the old engine?

I’m a big fan of Heian to Edo Japanese history, and I’m making some asset packages for Unity that are based on accurate traditional measurements and materials. Looking forward to seeing this project moving forward.

Hi Halley,

Thanks for your feedback! The top two images are both running in real-time on Unity, whereas the courtyard scene is a screenshot from the UDK project which we’re in the process of converting. In terms of poly count- the only elements we’re struggling to optimize are the tiles on the roofs, but other than that everything is around mid/low range polys.

All of the maps produced to date have been 1v1 duel maps, designed to help us develop our understanding of Japanese architecture/environments, so as we start working on larger maps we may have to optimize them further. One example of how we’ve optimized elements is the Bamboo shoots from screenshot #1. Only the front layer are actually 3D models, the rest are 2D or low-poly LOD iterations (FYI the bamboo models are from Michael.O’s tropical forest pack).

Thanks again for your feedback and we’re looking forward to seeing your Japanese assets on the store!

Thanks,
Sam

I got really excited when I saw the title of this thread, but then got turned off when I saw the word “first person action game” :rage:

any plans to add a third person view?? I feel like a game like this would be best played in third person view, but that’s just my opinion.

but none the less I think it looks and sounds great! so you still get a thumbs up from me, but please o please add third person! lol!

Hi Kuroato,

A third-person view is definitely planned! Like other games in the genre, we face the problem of syncing the first-person animations with the third-person ones… In reality it would be easier to JUST make the game third-person, but we want to keep our options open and give the choice to the players themselves!

Thanks for the feedback!
Sam

I agree with Kuroaro, I think that Third Person would be a good initial starting point for POV.

Besides that, not much shown besides the enviroments, but I must say, they look beautiful!

Goodluck on the project.

Thanks for the feedback Sickuhtrix (and Kuroato), its definately something we’ll look at in more detail now!

Here’s a few additional shots showing off part of the armory (the final armory list will have over 100 different weapons, or versions of the same weapon with slightly different properties):

Awesome katanas:smile:

It certainly looks impressive. I’m a huge fan of Feudal Japan culture in general.
Looking forward to see gameplay!
Tip for the combat mechanics, consider making something like “Bushido Blade”, although it’s quite old now, that game had awesome combat for its time.
This game really has the potential to become awesome, keep up

The artwork for this is incredible, if you get the mechanics and combat down right, this game will be a masterpiece for sure.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys.

This week we’ve been adding the finishing touches to the character’s rig, and have started playing around and posing him. Soon we’ll be able to show off the Character Customisation component- where this model is used as a base.
