Business on Unity for a single person, is it really?

Now I learn english, after I have 2 choices - programming (C#) and game making on Unity.
I like Unity.

Is it really to make games and make a good profit on Unity alone?

Single makers, how much money you earned at the first time?

Of course it is possible to make games and make profit with Unity, even as a single developer. Most likely though, most games require at least some programming either in C# or UnityScript (javascript). Otherwise you can try using a visual programming tool like Playmaker, UScript, etc. It totally depends on you and the quality of your game, how fun it is, how good the graphics are, what platforms you release it on, your marketing, etc.

I am releasing my first game September 6 and I have worked on it alone over the past 4 months. When I have some actual data, I will return here and let you know.

I haven’t released my game yet but I’m a single person team. It is possible for one-man teams to make quite a profit off Unity, and while you work on your game you can always release assets on the asset store, so that’s one great way to make money before your game is even done. A lot of people here have made profitable mobile games too.
It sounds like you’re saying that you can either learn C# or learn Unity but you can use C# in Unity so it’s a win-win for you. Game making is hard work, but Unity makes it much easier, especially for individuals.

Chances of first games being financially successful enough to live off are pretty slim. I wouldn’t bank on it.

Go look up any successful game and you’re likely to find a significant number of less successful prior games leading up to it. If you’re just starting, consider that if you’re financially successful you’ll most likely follow a similar path. And, you might not be one of the financially successful ones.

Thanks, asset store is cool and it all sounds great,

but I know I can earn on C# 1000$ every month in the future (if everything is going good),
Is Unity equal that? (If i am a single depeloper)

I also was studying C# and I know common codes, rules, for example arrays and even made simple games.
So, Should I be a very good programmer or common knowledge is enough to leverage for games?

I am addicted to that, I learned english for 6 month and continue, I am very serious and thank you for help

You can do a lot of things in Unity with just basic programming skills. But it would be wrong to make any assumptions about making money by default. Vast majority of games fail financially. I think you will need to be either very lucky or really creative and good developer or some kind of marketing genius to survive with games.

Ok, So programming better, I just suggested that Unity is more profitable, but I understand programming is more money.
If I mistake note please, I just hope.

Well you could easily make it if you did side work, odd jobs. Then you have to work on your game for the “jack pot” but I guess the side work will pay the bills. You could also put in some things in the asset store to get abit more income. the chances of winning the jackpot is quite low, so if you understand that and play the long game you improve your odds and wont go bankrupt.

As, from the sounds of it, you have very little to no experience in programming as a whole, the thought of making any kind of substainable living from either at this point is a bit of a stretch. If you are just looking at it from the aspect of pay, then I would personally say your chances of making a living are higher if you were to get a job working for a software development company oposed to being the sole developer behind a Unity project.

If you played a musical instrument, would you consider that as a potential source of primary income? Going into game development for your primary income is a pretty similar proposition - the few at the top get rich, a small percentage make a reasonable income, and the remaining, vast majority never make anything significant.

Ok thank you for attention, I habitually don’t praise myself, but now I should say:
I started study of English 7-8 months ago and today I have an incredible result, I watch TV and speak in English, after some time this process will end and then I have to make a choice.
I also learned C# for some term and this experience is little, but very good for spent time.

Today a simple thought becomes bigger.
And I just ask - Can a man like me earn on Unity more than 1000 dollars per month?
For example, I suppose I can use ready functions of Unity to make a small game (mario, puzzle),
can I upload them to the internet or sell to somebody and earn a modest profit?
What is a write choice - C# programming or Unity? (for a single developer).

But today I just ask for the future and I know almost nothing about economy of this business.

I am from Azerbijan and in my country nobody makes good games or makes nothing, so I am alone, but with the internet and good condition.

If you are a single developer, how much money did you earn at the first time in fact?

^ This. I doubt the OP will hear you though. His posts have the taint of confirmation bias.

Gigi.

$66. Which took 4 months of learning PLUS 9 weeks of focused product development PLUS plus several months of release prep marketing PLUS my 20 years of prior software dev experience. Without my day job, I’d have long since starved.

My first contract work was about 500€ (not with Unity but some other game engine) back in 2004. It´s perfectly doable to make a living if you´re willing to do some contract work. Beside these, you can work on your own game in your spare time. Lately I´ve done my first mobile game for a customer and it has payed me three months living with a wife and a kid, Unity Pro / Android Pro / iOS Pro, a mac mini and an iPad.

I’m by no means the best unity programmer and I work full time at a day job using unity and do contracting with a second local company that also uses unity. The second company pays crazy well, it would be 6 figures if it was full time work.

Not a single developer but pretty close so could be useful, there is just the two of us. We are 1 programmer (me) and 1 artist.

This was my lead up to get to where I am:

  • 3 years studying a Bachelor of Computer Science
  • 3 years as a professional software developer (outside of the field of game dev)
  • 1 year of learning Unity, working on a project that we didn’t finish

This was my business partner’s lead up to get to where he is:

  • 5 years studying architecture (involves lots of art, design and 3D modelling)
  • 1 year as a professional architecture drafter
  • 1 year of learning Unity, working on a project that we didn’t finish

Our first commercial release took us 8 months (part-time) and after 2 months has probably made us about $1,500. Some surveys might say that is above the median revenue of a company with only 1 released mobile game but it’s nothing to write home about. Especially because that equates to about $93.75 a month each.

It takes time to get good at game development and during that (potentially long) time of learning, you’re not going to make much money. Doable by 1 person? Yes. Reliably going to be making money as 1 person without experience straight away? Probably not.

2 rules apply everywhere in the global market nowadays:

  • there is always someone cheaper than you for the same job

  • there is always someone better than you for the same job

There are two paths to earn $1000 / month: 1) find someone paying that wage for your services (aka: are you good enough for a b2b international environment?); 2) become so good you can get that money selling your games/services.

  1. is difficult enough and you need to become proficient at professional level (“some months” are not enough for that); 2) is more difficult than 1) because you also need to deploy your products, market yourself proactively, keep your finances and so on.

If you have time and a good internet connection for learning, Unity and C# are a good combo to learn for the foreseeable future (1-3 maybe 5 years) and -with study and practice- you should be able to earn $1000/month at international level in 3 years time starting now. Good luck.

OK, thank you very much for attention and time and I end up with that I think a right choice is programming C# because of places where I can work and earn 1000 dollars a month.
At the first stage I planned to spend 5 years to gain english, programming and everything for game making on Unity,
I study all days, but it is not enough and because Unity is not so much better than programming from the aspect of pay.
Thus the right choice is C# programming.

While its not my place to suggest how you live your life- here is what I’ve always followed as a rule of thumb.

If you find something you love do it; become one of the best at it; and money will come later.

Do you love eating food and your friends are amazed at how much you can eat? Hundreds of people have made a living out of it.
Can you mow someone’s face into their lawn? People will pay.
Can you throw a rock the highest of anyone? People will pay.

Dont worry about money, do what makes you happy. Do you want to make games or make executables? What’s every you pick go and do it and do it more, how about some more. Are you sick of it? Then it’s not the correct place for you.

Of course this only applies to select cases. You would have to be pretty finically stable if you have dependencies.
