Buying a Mac

I want to buy an iMac so I can start developing some iPhone Games. I want to sell my custom gaming PC for $1000 on eBay, maybe craigslist. With a budget of $1000 and wanting to use Unity to make iPhone games, what should I get? Should I get a Macbook or stick with a desktop? Here is the specs of my PC and the prices of the parts. Do you think $1000 is reasonable?

Graphics card- Nvidia Geforce 512mb gt $150

Mobo- asus p5n-e sli $150

Processor- intel core 2 duo $150

Hard Drive- Seagate 1tb $100

Power Supply- Enermax Liberty 500w $100

Network Adapter- lynksys wireless n $100

Ram- 4gb Kingston $120

Cd drive- asus $20

24" Dell monitor- $300

Case- $75

Wireless Keyboard and Mouse $50

TOTAL Retail Price: $1,315.00 USD

If your $1000 budget relies upon selling that PC, I think you should probably set your sights a bit lower. iPod Touch maybe?

Um. No thanks. I have an iPhone. I’m not sure why you think I should lower my sights. My friend just did the exact same thing as I did. He sold his custom gaming PC for the same price and he got an iMac. So I know its possible.

I just checked eBay and CraigsList in my area (I’m thinking about selling my iMac) and looks like my 17" iMac Core Duo is worth around $500-$600 smackers. Something like that should be good enough to get you started with some money to spare.

Excellent. Because I would need $300 for Unity iphone and $75 to enter the development program.

Keep in mind that if you are going to get Unity 3.0 you’ll need Snow Leopard or Leopard and a lot of iMacs that vintage may only have Tiger installed, so be sure to either budget the upgrade to get one with it already installed.

Why not just custom build one and then crack osx on it?

Well if your friend’s “custom gaming PC” was about the same spec as yours, I’d ask him for the name of the mug he sold it to. I could build that rig brand new for a lot less than a thousand.

Almost anything is possible, but it’ll still come as a big disappointment more often than not if you expect the improbable.

Why would you want to sell you custom gaming machine.

edit: oh sorry, I thought that was what you wanted.

No offence, but that rig is most definitely not worth 1300$.

Firstly, you didn’t specify what card it was, so I’ll assume it’s a GT220 or GT240. That’s not the worst card, but definitely not the best. A GT240 at retail price is maybe 90$ if not less, so maybe put that price down a bit seeing as how 150 is a bit much. The mobo isn’t horrible, but again, 150 isn’t worth it. Maybe about 100 seems better.

Thirdly, the core 2 duo is not a very good processor. Even a core 2 quad isn’t amazing, and that’s what I’m using. 150$ no, 125 seems reasonable. The power supply and RAM seem decent, however the network adapter is most definitely not worth 100$. Not in the least. 50$ max.

Also, nobody uses a CDdrive anymore. DVD is more likely to be used and people would also want a Blu-ray drive as well, however 20$ seems reasonable for a DVD drive, not a CD drive though. The CD player should be a free thing.

Another point here:

The 24" monitor isn’t really worth 300$, especially a Dell. 250$ however, seems much more reasonable and that’s pushing it.

The case, wireless keyboard and mouse seem reasonable, so not bad. The total should be more like 1080 or so, and that's being generous. Just keep that all in mind, but yes 1000 seems reasonable.

Ya, someone can easily make a custom gaming rig for $1200, with six cores, and a gigabyte of video ram. Cough.

I think $1000 is too much. Nobody will want to buy a used gaming desktop at full retail price…

$1000 is still enough to get a used iMac… Right? I want to make some iPhone apps. I figured that things might be a little over priced since some of the websites I were looking at to figure costs were a little outdated. My graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce 7950 GT. The reason I priced my monitor at $300 is becuase its HD and comes with the sound bar. Thanks for everyone’s responses.

It’s enough to get a refurbished iMac. Currently there’s one there below $1000, and a few that are slightly above $1000.

Could I buy a mac mini and develop apps on that?!?! Thats a great idea!

yeah would work too

Indeed, shame they bumped the price up $100 (or more like €5,000 in Europe  ). Could possibly go for a refurb on that one too…

mac mini definitely does the job! and don’t forget a ipad.

Or you could get a Mac for $20 odd, just get VMware and run the mac as a virtual machine on your PC. Lots of articles on the web on setting up such a system, will at least get you started.

Get one of those new i7 iMacs, they’re monsters.
