I going through a lot of Unity tutorials right now, but I want to learn about game development and game design in general so I would like to get your advice about the book. I’ve seen several screencasts from ExtraCredits and not sure if going through the rest of videos is enough to get a general understanding about game dev.
This one’s allegedly good for beginners.
Thanks, but I prefer video tutorials.
In case anyone looking books to read:
Now I’m not quite sure what you are actually looking for…
Extra Credits are nice, but I’d rather consider them “food for thought”. They are too short and superficial to really teach you specific things. Still worth a watch though, imho. I’ve watched many GDC talks lately.
Don’t read books about Unity.
IMO good long term investment are design books. That’s because they get outdated very slowly and have very broad applications. For Unity it’s useful to pick something through about .Net and C#.
Hopefully this is relevant, its something I bought recently
This:
I didn’t actually ask about coding/programming and Unity itself. I’ve asked about game development and game design in general. I appreciate the comment of the guy who suggested a Unity book, but still when it comes to coding, I prefer video over text.
How do you find it? Is it a good one? I think think it was a free web version for this book?
Thank you
@Gigiwoo is this the same one you recommended in your Unite talk?
Yes! Schell’s book is a great starting point. It touches on lots of points where you can dig deeper. You may also enjoy, “Design Better Games! Flow, Motivation, and Fun”, a chapter I wrote a few years back.

Game Development and Game Design don’t really have much in common, apart from sounding similar.
Development is all about implementation details, so you would be better off practicing alongside tutorials (like you are now), instead of reading books about it.
Learning about game design is honestly not nearly as useful as learning to be efficient in developing games. Sure it might entertaining, but wont help you that much irl.
