We have a Wii and I also have Unity 4.3. I want to make games with Unity that I can play on the Wii. Is it possible? Or do I HAVE to get the Wii U? Thanks a bunch.
You need a development kit from the Console manufacture, then it’s possible for both.
However I’m quite sure there is minimum 1 kit pr platform.
A bit more info here - for the wii u - after they gave away free kits for awhile…

A bit of info about the WiiU kit
http://wiiudaily.com/wii-u-dev-kit/
But in short.
Yes you can develop for the WII and or WII-U if you want
But you need to get the dev kit so you can build for the platform.
Now weither Unity supports Wii or WII-U - I don’t know. But i would be very interested in learning if it is
WiiU seems to be focused on Direct downloads a lot more than nintendo previously had, and they are desperate
to get games on their platform.
EDIT - and if you look in your build option there allready is a build for WII-U
depending on which license you have you can use that…
Don’t you also need the unity licences?
Contact the sales team if you want to discuss pricing. You will need to be approved by Nintendo as a developer.
I am going to assume that is way out of my price range
I’ve been approved for a Wii-U dev kit, not as expensive as one might think.
Can you please give us a hint of total cost, for developing wii-U? Devkit cost+unity license cost+misc.
I thought that unity came free with the Wii-U devkits?
No, because that is being handled by Nintendo. The OP was asking about the Wii. The Wii license is sold by Unity to people who have been approved by Nintendo. Pricing is at least an order of magnitude more than you may be used to.
I googled a bit and found 5K as the dev kit cost + whatever the unity licence is.
Well I made a submission and said I what I wanted to use it for (which would be free) and I will wait and see but I imagine it is completely unrealistic for me.
Hmm, then it might be affordable for me in near future. Will give it a try. I am just wondering of what makes wii-u so special(/valuable) from developer’s side, that it requires 5k to just start deving on it.
The quote I was given was under the $5k mark but pretty close.
Because included in the price of the devkit is access to Nintendo’s engineers, sample code, and all the software you need to develop for the Wii-U.
$5k is small amount of money.
If you are proficient and can make games well, there should be no reason to fuss over such small amounts. The wages alone for good developer is over $5k per month, full-time basis. Any employer who can pay that much, can probably afford it.
Just out of curiosity… as I currently don’t have any I have never tried exporting to consoles, but can you export to consoles without the license? (For personal learning/fun)
No.
To make it all short:
Yes, Wii U license for Unity is free to all Wii U license holders.
No, it does not come with the console, separate request is required.
No, you cannot export a Wii or Wii U Unity game to a retail console nor test device. Dev kit only.
No, you do not contact the Unity team directly for a Wii or Wii U license. They won’t trust you if you do so.
My application didn’t even warrant a reply from nintendo even thought i work at a big museum! (i did it work related not personal games related)
I think all you said was right but, for the Wii license you do need to contact support.
