Can i use unity in iran

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know which Unity services are restricted for development in Iran, and which services are accessible? Can I use Unity for game development and create a Unity account while in Iran?

Thank you,

no. unity is not available in Iran, Cuba, Syria, and North Korea.

So it means that no Unity services can be used at all?

Unity Terms of Service state that you aren’t allowed to use Unity (at present) if you are doing business in Iran (24.7 c).

24.7 Trade Control Laws

[…]
You confirm that none of you, your directors, employees, contractors, or Affiliates: (a) are individuals or entities identified on, or owned or controlled by or acting on behalf of entities identified on applicable Trade Controls restricted party lists (such as the List of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons, Foreign Sanctions Evaders List, Denied Persons List, Unverified List, and Entity List) (collectively, “Restricted Parties” ), (b) are entities owned or controlled by one or more Restricted Parties, (c) do business in countries or regions subject to comprehensive Trade Controls, including Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, and the Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine, (“Sanctioned Countries” ) or with government-affiliated entities in Sanctioned Countries, or (d) Will engage in or facilitate any activities with Sanctioned Countries or Restricted Parties.

Is it possible to use Unity software for educational or personal purposes in Iran? Are there specific restrictions for personal use? I do not intend to use it for commercial purposes

You should be asking Unity customer support, not the forums.

You’re already on forum, so i guess already activated personal free license? Just use it if no one sees and its personal or use godot which is basically just a standalone open-source single exe file.

Also there is a saying: “A law exists to violate it”. In personal use case you won’t even lose any money, maybe only registration problems for free license.
Idk, anyways there was some fork(?) even of Unity or something like Tiny Unity, that should be enough for 2D development education.

Btw, sanctioned countries is interesting part.
Is this: “Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, and the Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine”
The whole list? Cause there no links to the full list

this is the list

https://ofac.treasury.gov/sanctions-programs-and-country-information

no.

use godot, end of story

well the terms of service don’t say they use ofac exactly, anyways Iran is in terms also

and you know people can do anything, not catched not a thief, ha-ha! :moyai:
Especially considering that some things are restricted for no proper reasons even twenty years ago. (Not about Unity here)

You know, all the time you spent here asking you could have created an account, download the Hub, and try get a license to see if you can open up the editor.

Most likely nothing prevents you from doing that and using Unity. I don’t even expect the cloud services to be firewalled on Unity’s side, if anything a state-owned firewall may prevent you from using (parts of) Unity.

no, it doesn’t work, I’ve seen forum posts from people complaining that they can’t use unity even if they are using a vpn because unity hub somehow detects they are from a sanctioned country.

is not that unity has a choice in this, if they ignore those government rules then they can get fines or worse.

also unity has strong business ties with Israel from when they have merged with ironSource an Israel mobile advertising company. so you may start to imagine that ignoring the sanctioned countries list in favor of Iran will not going to happen

In sanctioned countries, there is access to some parts of the Unity website. I have used a VPN to access certain sections and successfully gained access. I couldn’t find any specific articles addressing the use of VPNs with Unity. Additionally, sometimes I can access different parts of the site without using a VPN. Now, I’m unsure if using a VPN is harmful or not

using a vpn is not harmful except if your country treats the use of vpn as illegal. I did not checked personally if is true, but organizations that deal with digital and media freedoms reports that using a vpn in Iran and China is illegal and may be punished with jail time.
