Can not select a folder to add a project in the Unity Hub in Ubuntu

When I try to add an existing project to the Unity Hub, I get a dialog box to select the folder. However, when I click on the “Open” folder, the folder does not get selected. Instead, it opens to shows its content. Therefore, I am unable to select folders, only files, but if I try to select a file, the Unity Hub says that it is not a valid project.

In previous versions of the Unity Hub, this behavior could be bypassed pasting directly the path to the folder in the text boxes, but in the last version of the Unity Hubs, paths can not be pasted in the text boxes, since the dialog box appears whenever I click on the text box.

I have tried several ways to select the folder (such as double click, right click, Shift+click, Control+click, etc.) but none of them seems to work.

The workaround I am using with is to create a “fake” project in the default location. Then I close this project to delete its content and paste the content of the project I want to open.

Another potential workaround is using the terminal to open the project with the command “Unity -projectPath [pathToTheFolder]”, but this is less useful, since it needs to go to the terminal each time you want to work with the project.

Does anyone knows any way of selecting a folder without opening it in the Unity Hub using Ubuntu?

Thanks for reading this issue?

Hi @granadaj

Which Ubuntu version are you on? There’s a known issue with directory selection in Electron on Ubuntu 20.04. See details here: Regression since v36.2.0: `dialog.showOpenDialog({ properties: ['openDirectory'] })` opens a file picker and returns file paths on Ubuntu 20.04 · Issue #48356 · electron/electron · GitHub

Unity Hub currently only supports Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04. We don’t actively support any versions outside of these. For other distros and versions, we have a use-at-your-own-risk policy.

Hi @christophera_unity,

Many thanks for your answer! I’m actually using Ubuntu 20.4. I didn’t know that this was a reported bug, I thought I was simply unable to do it correctly.

I’ll try to update to a new OS. However, do you know an alternative way of adding a project to the Unity Hub? For instance, could I tweak some file to change the location of an already created/added project?

Many thanks again for your support!

Actually yes, you can do that!

  • Create a project and wait for the project to be ready
  • Close the Hub fully
  • Delete new project and rename target project to the same name/location
  • Open the Hub and you’ll now have the project available

I literally just asked this question as well. At least it’s not just me

I have been investigating this issue, so this is what I have found:

I sent a bug report for this and I received an answer explaining the issue is due to an incompatibility between the current Unity Hub and Ubuntu 20 (and maybe previous releases). Since Unity currently supports Ubuntu 22.04, and Ubuntu 24.04, it’s not something that it’s going to be fixed. The most clear solution is updating Ubuntu to Ubuntu 24 and install Unity 6.3. In my case the update process was much more smoother making copies of the Firefox and Thunderbird folders.

Please take into account that Unity 2020 does not work well with Ubuntu 24.04, and Unity 6.3 does not work well with Ubuntu 20.04 (at least in my case!). The good news is that Ubuntu 24.04 works perfectly with Unity 6.3 and updating the project is quite simple. I would recommend backing up the original project (just in case), deleting the folders “Library” and “Logs” and then updating the project to 6.3 using the hub. The first time it will take a bit more to load the project, but then it will be a freeze. If you use the TextMeshPackage you may have to install it, but I would recommend not installing the “Samples & Extras” part, since it raises some scripting errors.

Yep, updating from Ubuntu 20.04 to 24.04 resolved the issue for me
