the answer according to the documentation is a clear “YES !”
Materials
Generation Controls how materials are generated:
Off This will not generate materials at all.
Per Texture Enable this to generate material files near the found texture files. When enabled, different scenes will share the same material settings when they use the same textures. For the precise rules, see Material Generation below.
Per Material This will generate materials per scene, so only this scene uses them.
my scenario is:
i have 50 maya scenes all have their own material in there that links to the same texture and all those materials are named exactly the same i would have expected that unity would automatically create a material on the import of the first model and than the 49 models afterwards will realize that a material with the proper name already exists and automatically assign that one !
but no matter what setting i try it just wont work like the documentation says
unity always generates a material per scene and calls it “SCENENAME”-“MATERIALSNAME”.mat in a Materials subfolder next to the maya scenes !
we have written a mass reassign script now to deal with this
none the less it would be great if unity could adjust the documentation or better yet fix this i guess !
or maybe i am just doing something dead wrong suggestions ?
