Can terrain detail meshes have basic shading applied?

As far as I can tell, detail meshes for terrain can only be lit with flat shading. Below is an example. On the left is the mesh as it appears when manually put into the scene, and on the right is the same mesh, but applied using the terrain detail mesh brush.

It looks flat and … quite awful. Is there an option for mesh shading that I’m missing?

I guess I’m asking really a really dumb question? Is the answer that obvious? Well Google doesn’t seem to reveal much.

What do you guys know that you’re not telling me?
