Can this please stop?

Sometimes I get private messages on the forums like this one:

Personally I don’t appreciate it at all that people send me messages like this with shortened links. Legit or not, it doesn’t matter, it’s extremely shady looking. Have some of you experienced the same?

Alex

EDIT: It seems like he’s mass spamming this, which makes me think even more this is shady. I’m definitely reporting him and I suggest you watch out

Never seen any messages like this. Is this a PM on the forum?

Yes it is.

Never seen a message like this. If it is from a user, I think the best idea is to block/ignore the user and move on.

Looks like the reason why you even got it in the first place is because your nickname starts with letter “a”.

Also… I recall several people trying to sell source code of their games on the forums. Looks like it is roughly the same thing.

Me too, I never received spam PMs, very weird.
Btw, I also use URL shorteners, haha

URL shorteners are good for two things - 1) Shortening URLs 2) Obfuscating malicious links.

Looks like his link just goes to a google drive link. I didn’t bother to look, but a .unitypackage is probably harmless.

Go to his profile, report him as spammer and then click on “ignore”. You’ll never get messages from him in the future after that.

For the url shortener user is also good to check the link perfomance.

As long as people don’t use adf.ly I’m good.

This. You could optionally throw in a report too but if they’re determined they’ll simply make another account and continue.

You can also report a PM message directly. That’s what I do in case of spam.

Summoning the wrath of Eric the ZombieHippo does seem to stop things fairly effectively.

Yes, just report it. Also yes, they do make more accounts, but just keep reporting them. Eventually they get tired of it and go away. (In this case the accounts conveniently use the same IP…thanks for making banning your clone accounts easier, whoever you are!)

Just wanted to throw this in: at least bit.ly and goo.gl have their own analytics page (original URL, how many times has it been clicked, etc). You just need to put a + at the very end.

Try it out (both URLs redirect to the Unity Forums):

Copy one of them, paste it into the address bar of your browser and attach a + to its end, then hit Enter.

I have been sent this message only once but I don’t believe that it’s so annoying

What’s the point of those messages, exactly? I mean, the end goal?

Giving source code to get “valuable feedback” is odd.

The point is not that it’s annoying, but some of these links might be malicious and some users might actually click on them.

I occasionally get PMs like this, but they are from people I tried to help on the forums. They’re all like “hey could you test my game and send me a detailed report on what’s wrong with it?” or “can you do this long task for me that I can’t do?” I simply tell them how much it will cost them for me to do that and they go away. But then again, they aren’t spam, just unsolicited collaboration requests.

Very odd indeed. “Malicious links” sounds feasible though.

Incompetent business men is another explaintion. It’s also possible that it’s a harmless first round to pick marks for a more malicious scam.

I’ve had a few messages like that. I just ignore them and move on with my day.
