I have been wondering do you have to have another 3d program for character making or can you create a character only with unity? I looked at some videos and the videos confused me more. And Yes I am new at this so if you could answer in a way a newb would understand that would be great. 
You should use another package that is designed for 3D modelling. There are some assets on the Asset Store that will let you model inside Unity - but they will always be more limited than a real modelling package.
