Hi, just wondered if the new GUI canvas element will allow you to draw simple shapes like a circle, ellipse, or rectangle? That would be very useful indeed. Or is it just text?
No. Itâs not a content-creation tool, itâs a content-layout and interaction tool.
Well they shouldnât call it a canvas then!
If you want to get technical, the only true canvas is one intended for oil-based painting - but great painters like Maxfield Parrish may have argued that a canvas is just something you paste other content onto in layers⌠which is pretty much what the new Unity canvas is⌠so thereâs that.
Are canvass even made of canvas any more? If not then they really shouldnât call it that!
Hehe, true. Iâm pretty sure most canvases are still made with hemp, flax, or cotton - Iâve seen some that felt like nylon though. Unityâs is made with pure energy - and isnât that what everything is made of?
Draw anything you want onto a texture and show it in the canvas. Tada!
I think yoonitee was hoping for vector-based drawing (like flash/scaleform) - which can also be done by using an eps importer (or maybe even ragespline), but itâs a bit more complicated.
Ha! This is really kinda funny. The term âcanvasâ (as in software, like Unity, HTML and other languages), I never associated with the stretched painting surface (I also preferred illus. board or masonite.) until you brought it up. But, that makes perfect sense, as clearly the source for the term.
In my head, I just always took canvas to be a temporary, dry, portable place to do stuff. Like a canvas tent or laying down canvas on ground. Funny that I think about. I guess growing up in Oregon/Pacific NW, I hear âcanvasâ I think camping, outdoor festivals, and hippies selling beads on the ground. long before I think oil paintings.
