Can you insert multiplayer options into your games at anytime?

Hi, i’m just wondering if you can insert multiplayer options into your games at anytime you want, maybe even half way through development.

The idea i have in mind is a singleplayer game with multiplayer options like CO-OP, if i work on the singleplayer mode could i add multiplayer later on or would there be something restricting me later on such as errors or something.

Could these problems occur?
Engine (I’m not entirely sure if the engine could affect the game not being able to go online, but could something within the game stop it?)

  1. Network Players
  2. Lag
  3. Poor Programming

Code (Could some code in the game restrict it also?)
Errors while coding (Can all code errors be fixed or could a code completly ruin the project)

Or would the game be completely fine and may have to go under many or a few changes.

Thanks for reading.

Kid, could you please stop trolling this board and start doing something finally?
make arcanoid with coop feature for the start, you will get all answers you need. To learn swimming you gotta get wet

Network play can be added any time.

If you didn’t program the game with any forethought to making it network capable, it’ll probably need a major rewrite.

Main problems
a) Game/scripts have been setup from the perspective of One player.
b) Synchronising all the game objects between multiple clients. (anything dynamic, doors, vehicles, etc)

I’m not trolling anything…

Trying to just “add” multiplayer later is a really bad idea. Buckle down and learn a bit of multiplayer and learn how to make the actors do what you wish them to do in a very basic way, then worry about making the amazing levels.

Go back playing COD: Black Ops. I’m afraid games development is not for you.

sure you could add multiplayer later… it would be just a little more complex…

@Mister Edvinas … you said :

… who are you to say such things ? we all are learning here in one way or another … and you Mister Ed need to learn and be nice around here … you Mister Ed are not in the right place with that kind of attitude

… and you Mister Ullukai need to quit adding triple dots instead of one …

just kidding
It came out all wrong the way I said it there, I meant that he should just quit what he’s aiming for at the moment (as in what he wrote in this topic) and go back playing Call of duty, because it seems like he knows absolutely nothing about games development and he stumbled upon Unity thinking and the example demo project thinking that he will make another Call of duty multiplayer game within few days.

I’m just saying that he should quit this idea he has now and start somewhere small considering he has 0 knowledge of games dev or go back playing COD. Not saying that he should do games development at all :d

The problem with the TS is that seems like he did not stumble upon any example demo project. Instead, he just continues asking very general questions. This is what he calls “learning”

@ Mister Ed… thanks for clearing that up … it sounded to me at first that you meant he should just give up…and i will try to use my dots with descretion then… but my habit is of the unordinary> to not use one dot. I also agree with what you said :

… yes, quit the multiplayer idea for the moment and learn more first, then come back to multiplayer ideas later . At least he is asking > we all started using unity 3d at sometime. We are all here on the forums to help each other are we not ?

One simple advice, learn the basics of programming, then basics of game programming. Once you successfully shipped few titles then try to learn basics of networking and then finally network game programming. You cant run without even know how to walk son. ^^
Good luck and happy coding.^^

They are all valid questions for someone who is starting out, but I understand it could be bothersome to see these questions showing up here. Someone suggested that there be a forum section dedicated to newcomers, and I think that’s a good thing.

In the meantime, IndieDude360, use answers.unity3d.com instead. This forum section is meant for gossip.

I’ve been looking into networking all this week.

You could add the networking after, but from what I’ve been playing with, it would seem easy to write a solid plan out and built it with both from the ground up.

Are you talking to me?
@Mister Edvinas

@ Mister Edvinas
I’m not one of those stupid people that assume they could make World of Warcraft in one week and be selling millions in the next, i know how hard game development is and i wouldn’t bother rush a game, i would sit back and relax and stop development after awhile and begin it again, and i can’t stand COD or the people that play it, it’s a completly stupid game that people shouldn’t play at all.

Personally I think the range of questions he is asking is fair, are articulated in proper grammar with attempts to use the correct jargon when exposed to it and shows an interest and development from the beginning question to the latest… I don’t see a troll, I see a very inquisitive student. If he proceeds methodically he can succeed given the time and continued learning and getting ducks in a row. However the suggestion to post these at the unity answers site is goods as he will get good answers, leave a trail of tags other can search and check all the other question with answers similar. One can spend all day there starting with one question and cycling through the tags on the right hand side as one invariably connects to a related topic.
