cant get answers from unity

Hi
i tryed to contact the team more than 2 times but no one answer GDC is over right ?
if they dont answer i will ask the users of the pro version , is the shadows in unity have bugs ? im afraid because i read more than one topic saying its not working right , even in these topics unity dosnt answer them too .
so any pro user tell me does it worth 1500$ ?

excuse my poor english

I think it is easily worth the $1500

ok
what about the shadow problem how long was it there ?

A colleague send me a quick application demoing some pro features (including shadows) and i must admit they were all stripy and full of artifacts. Iā€™m not sure though if it was do to his lights setups. I too am interested to hear from other Unity 2.5 users (Windows Version) with regards to shadows.

BTWā€¦ iā€™m currently trialing the demo version and emailed sales@ about 5 days ago to get a pro trial and havenā€™t heard anything. My Indie trial is up soon.

Cheers,
Matt.

Just out of curiosity, what makes it ā€œworth itā€?

Iā€™m going to get all ā€œproā€, because I want smaller file sizes for downloads (especially iPhone) and shadows on PC/Mac (not sure about practicality of shadows on iPhone).

Iā€™m curious to hear otherā€™s reasons.

The iphone part is not of importance as Unity iPhone is an addon license. Its not included.

Pro is worth it to me due to the presence of render textures especially, which are a requirement for various shaders.

Also, Pro offers Plugins and naturally the splashscreen free crossplatform deployment.

In addition there are the streamed webplayer movie texture support, which are usefull additions actually

Because it has a bajillion features (more than any one person could reasonably use) and is very good.

Zero possibility; the hardware canā€™t do it. You can of course come up with different ways to do shadows on your own, like this.

i just get the code to test the pro thx tom
Q : is it possible that point spot light cast soft shadows ?
because i tryed but only the sun light can cast it

Spot light: soft shadows yes, point light: only hard shadows. (Point lights are very hard on the shadow system since they have to be rendered with a cube map; i.e., 6 times.)

ā€“Eric

its a sham , but nevertheless im buying it
thank you Eric

What about the shadow artifacts, has anyone else had these with Unity 2.5 / Windows?

Cheers

Artifacts show usually because of the user doing something not right. The scale of your objects/scene has a lot to do with that for instance. Then you also have ā€œBiasā€ features which need tweaking.

@mrbdrm: GDC is over and weā€™re hard at work getting through all the emails and phone calls. How did you contact us (sales@? trial@?) and what email address did you use (feel free to PM that if youā€™d like)? Iā€™ll see about finding your inquiry to make sure itā€™s moved along and if not, get a reply out to you ASAP myself if necessary. Thanks!

@ F Brickwork

About the artifacts (if youā€™re talking about my one), thenā€¦ yeah, it was my fault. I didnā€™t really have a clue when it comes to this. I just do the logic

They didnā€™t happen in my online demoey thing.

This. ^^^

When I first upgraded to Pro earlier this evening, I turned on shadows in my projectā€™s lights, and the results were all messed up, with nasty moire patterns in various objects.

But tweaking the bias settings in the lights made the problems go away, and now everything looks nice and pretty. :sunglasses:

Sorry to butt in, but please if I am just doing something wrong, show me what it is:

I know some people have said that it is due to lights etc not being setup properlyā€¦ butā€¦

I opened the ShadowExample app from the Unity website into my Pro Trial and these artifacts are in this too. *Look at the walls next to the small table lamp in the lounge, youā€™ll see black rings on the wall!

I am/was considering buying the pro version, but to be honest, i wonā€™t until i can get a verifiable response that realtime shadows are correctable within Windows Unity 2.5.

Cheers

Have you tried playing with the bias settings for the lights?

I did change the bias to various different values, but to be honest, this was just random playing as iā€™m not sure how the bias affects things.

That said, I couldnā€™t find a setting to remove the artifacts.

Matt.
