I am very very excited to learn of the Unity design tool. In addition to potentially making games, I am looking forward to using it as a platform for animated films and as a base for other types of virtual worlds.
Unfortunately, I cannot get started I have been trying for two days. I have read the tutorials, watched videos and re-installed several times. But, when I start a new project, I
A. can see no camera and
B. Cannot create terrain. Here is what I see on my screen after I open a new project and select the “create terrain” function (notice no camera, and the directional arrows appear once the terrain is created). Zooming in, hitting “f” and rotating around that point reveals nothing. Turning on the lights also not.
I did manage to get something to happen once, and even imported a RAW map. But it looked terrible, so I deleted it from the Heirarchy and Project widows. I then received this error when I tried to create new terrain:
I then deleted the whole project and created a new one, but the problem I list initially has been the only result.
I am so bummed! I have so many things I wish to create RIGHT NOW, and can’t even get going on Step 1! Is it me, or is there something wrong with my software?
Thank you so much, I remain super excited and dying to get started!
I haven’t used the newest version of Unity yet, so there may be things that have changed that I’m not aware of. But, what if you just create an empty scene, and then add a primitive (such as box) at the origin? Is that object visible? Is there a camera object in the empty scene, and can you position and orient it so that the primitive you added is visible?
Also, have you tried opening the demo project that comes with Unity? If so, does that project work?
Thanks for answering. Well, it seems I cannot create anything, now that you ask. Not even a lonely cube.
I just get the directional arrows whenever I create an object–but they are attached to nothing in the space.
The Bootcamp demo works, but neither the Island or Sewage Projects load. I read in other forums that these do no work with Unity 3, so I am assuming that is correct and that this sheds no light on my problem.
Oh, and there is no camera. Just four little white points where it should be.
I honestly don’t know what to do. I have re-installed 4 times.
Maybe someone else will be able to tell you what’s wrong based on your description, but to me at least it’s not immediately evident what the problem is. Here are a few suggestions though:
Take a screenshot of the editor with a simple scene (e.g. a camera and a cube), with, say, the cube selected and visible in the inspector. (Make sure the resolution of the screenshot is such that we can read the text in the inspector.)
Post a project that demonstrates the problem (you can post it as a Unity package).
If all else fails, file a bug report. (However, I think it’s at least a possibility that there’s something simpler going on here, and that whatever it is, it can be fixed.)
[Edit: What happens when the demo fails to load? Do you get any error messages (e.g. in the console)? Or can you just not see anything in the scene view?]
Ok, I Have uninstalled and reinstalled once more. Still, there is nothing.
When I create a new project, I have no camera icon showing in the scene window.
I cannot see a cube or light if I rez one
I cannot see a terrain if I rez one.
The Hierarchy window shows that these things have been created,
The Inspector shows all of them positioned close to 1, 1, 1 coordinates./ scale is 1,1,1.
But I cannot see them in the scene window.
Here is a screen shot of a new project with a cube and terrain rezzed. The directional arrows show up whenever I select a GameObject in hierarchy–but only the arrows, never the actual object.
Can you see those white dots in the scene window near the directional arrows? They show up when I select camera in Hierarchy instead of the camera icon.
If I select the cube or the terrain in the hierarchy, I see the same: arrows and nothing. Inspector shows them all close to 0,0,0 in position.
I see a grey shape in the preview window, that I assume is the terrain, but it does not show up in the scene.
Why do I feel like this is something really simple, that I have spent 2 days NOT finding???
It looks like the field of view for your camera is set to a very low value; a more typical value would be 60 or so. (That’s probably not the problem, since that shouldn’t affect the scene view, but it’s probably worth checking.)
Deactivate or remove the terrain object. Then, select the cube in the hierarchy, move the mouse over the scene view to give it focus, and press ‘F’. This will focus the scene-view camera on the cube; see if the cube is visible at that point.
Post the Unity version, OS, and video card that you’re using.
Make sure there are no error messages in the console. (If there are, you should see some text in red at the bottom of the Unity window.)
Try adding a single directional light. (With only ambient light present in the scene, objects with a homogenous material will not be distinguishable if they occupy the entirety of the camera view or overlap one another.)
Select the cube in the hierarchy and see if the mesh is visible in blue wireframe.
Switch the view to wireframe mode (the drop-down in the top left that currently says ‘textured’) and see what’s visible (or not visible) at that point.
You are being so nice, thank you! I am sorry to take so much of your time.
I tried all you suggested, nothing:
I increased the camera field of view to 60
I cannot rez anything, including a directional light, although everything shows in Hierarchy
I can see nothing in wireframe (edit: correction, I CAN see the cube in blue wireframe but not the light or camera)
“f” focus on an object reveals nothing
There are no error messages
My specs are not completely current, but should suffice:
Vista with Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel duo E6500 @ 2.33GHz
Nvida GeoForce 8600
2 Gigs Ram
I am so bummed…
It worked for a short while, but not well and was not stable. Re-installs have changed nothing. Do you know if the Unity lab is fairly good about assisting in situations like this, or would I need to first be a Pro subscriber?
Wow, none of that made any difference? Those were all my best ideas
Regarding technical support, I think the forums here are usually the best bet for things like this. You could try PMing a forum mod and asking them to take a look at the thread; you could also submit a bug report.
Maybe someone else will spot the problem, but the only other thing I can suggest at this point, I think, is to create a Unity package of your project and post it here so that people can check it out directly.
I applied a texture to the cube and a light. It now shows in the Game window (at a very weird perspective that will only show a single flat surface even if I pan around the cube), but it still does not appear in the scene window.
Ok, I will figure out how to create a unity package, but there is not much to the project yet (lol!) just a cube, a light and lots of grey space
I will be back with that. Thank you again!
I do apologize, but I am not sure what I am supposed to upload from the unity package I have made, so that someone might be able to help me figure out why nothing is rezzing in my scene space.
I have 3 folders that resulted from building: Manage, Mono, Resources and 2 files: MainData Sharedassets.
Sorry about this question…I am still very new, and did not quite understand what I read about actually building a game.
Thank you!
Oh, and I also posted a new screenshot in the post above that shows the cube with a texture on it showing in the game window but still not in the scene window.
This is a very long shot but anyway, are all the layers selected? (In that dropdown on the upper right)
It’s probably not the problem, but that is the only thing that I ever saw that even resembled your problem
Thx Vortex! That was also my problem!
So after a week of searching, i can get on with things
@Xeno: look at the upper right to the layer button (first button), then check all of the boxes. My problem was “default” was not checked. (but seing the date, you probably have figured it out :p).
Jumping in with a note here: I had this same problem with the terrain not showing, only I had all the layers activated. After trying a lot of things I went to Window → Layouts → Revert to factory settings, and that did the trick! Now the terrain is showing as it should. I just though that I’d share this if anyone else kept having this problem. Now off to dive into Unity.
Hey, this is maybe not an answer on your question, but I can’t find ```terrain?! So I can't click create terrain:( I want to work at DICE, so I supposed that I could try to make my own game so I can learn, but it seems like I can't do I shit withoutTerrain``. I have tried many things, but it is still not working. Is this a hard problem, or am I just stupid like hell?
