can't see the grid in scene view Unity4

I cant see the perpective base grid in the scene view. I am working with Unity 3 tutorial and videos that all have the base ground plane grid. I just downloaded Unity4 - PC Win7

found it - the Landscape toggle was on.
why out of the box it set that way???
