Can't work out what's happening with Draw Calls

Hi all,

So, I bought some assets from the asset store, loved them, couldn’t be happier. I decided to use the demo scene it had to test out some functionality. I noticed that there was some really bad lag in points. So I then decided to delete all models excluding walls and doors and test the scene from that point on. It improved, but on the odd occasion I still get a lag spike. I have noticed it seems to be when I am rotating to face a wall. I have looked in the profiler but I can’t work out exactly what the problem is. I think its the lights or shadows?

This is what the profiler says…

Update/Bump:

Okay, so I downloaded the package again. Put in my FPS Controller, and there was no lagg…at all. It ran better than it ever has. However, I have noticed that attaching some of my scripts back on, its starting to slow down again. Am I right in assuming something in my scripts is causing this render increase? I don’t think they are, but its the only thing I can think of O.o

Probably considering it only happens when your scripts are involved :stuck_out_tongue:

Aha! I found it! Its Unity’s FPS Controller. But…but…how?! Why is that controller causing me to lag and have a drop in frame rate?

Post it’s code here, I’ll come look to see if there’s anything glaringly obvious I can fix.

The whol of Unity’s Own FPSController? Okay, you asked for it! :stuck_out_tongue:

Not a problem.

And I don’t see anything obvious that could be doing it… maybe I should go download the standard assets for once and see if it happens here. (Haven’t actually used the standard assets for ages, I do everything from scratch these days! :p)

EDIT: Actually, does a rigidbody in the scene drop framerate too? do you have a Nvidia chip? Unless unity doesn’t do so, maybe the GPU’s being bogged down by being utilized by PhysX to do stuff… (even the character controller, as it’s essentially a fancy kinematic rigidbody for, erm, characters…)

See, I was thinking it could be Rigidbody to. However, I removed all the ones I had in my scene (Apart from the one on the FPSController) and nope, still a huge drop  I should again also mention that this drop in frame rate only seems to happen when the player is rotating or close up to a wall. If that helps work out the problem?

Close up to a wall… which platform, and which shader? I ask because if going up against a wall drops the framerate, your pixel shaders are too expensive for your machine. Rotating could also bring into view large objects in your scene, (the bigger an object on-screen is, the higher the fragment shading cost, of which gets worse with more complex shaders) so check your shaders.

Other rendering details, such as if you’re running deferred rendering or not could help too.

Would having the Quality settings set to fantastic and also having render setting as Legacy Deferred (light prepass) be the cause? I didn’t think it would be as the other controller works fine with those settings. But unitys FPSController doesn’t seem to like it

Ok. Generally, fantastic has everything on the highest settings. (Ye don’t say?) Once I get to a charger, I’ll post a set of quality settings to try out.
