Carlpilot's Coding: C# Tutorials for Unity

I feel that Unity needs a collection of text tutorials all in one place which is easy to navigate and find the tutorial that you need. That’s why I created Carlpilot’s Coding. I will frequently add new tutorials and respond to suggestions from the community.

Tutorials:
1. Intro to Unity
2. Creating our first Rigidbody
3. Custom Character Controllers
4. Cubes!
5. Aerial Combat
6. Agar

Carl you ought to do a focus group of your friends and release the 1st flash card tutorials of Unity Tutorials. And a second (big) set of flashcards that is the Unity API/Usage documentation.

Ah, nevermind. Maybe if you put the flashcards in a rolodex.

That’s awesome! You’re welcome to guest write an article on my blog if you wish

That’s a great idea. Bookmarked so I can go interrogate it when I have issues

As someone with satellite internet and the very limited bandwidth that comes with it, I wish more people would use text. I hate having to wait until the bandwidth cap is lifted to learn how to do something. I especially hate it when the video doesn’t have any talking and the person is just typing their instructions onto notepad while elevator music plays. Man I hate that. If I have to read your video, why are you making a video?

You probably already now that Hughes has unlimited download for like 2 - 4 hours per early morning hours. Forget how what hours exactly, it’s been a while, but you can schedule cron jobs to download your tutorials and Unity patches.

Actually with Gen 4 Hughes got rid of the unlimited time and switched to a larger download bucket for their overnight period. I switched to Exede though and do get unlimited time between 12-5am. I’m usually up during those times, so that is when I watch videos or shows on Hulu or whatever.

Im sure its coming, but Carls Coding seems pretty in-accurate since there aint no code there.

You might be wasting your time rewriting stuff that’s already covered in the first couple of pages of the manual. I’d suggest skipping the basics and focusing on intermediate level concepts. Unity itself has got the basic markets done up tight.

Despite the various forum protests, video tutorials have proved to have a significantly greater reach, uptake and revenue for me. Of course, I’m still small fry in the tutorials business, so my results may not be statistically significant.

Tutorial #3 is now available, where we create our own simple character controller to learn the basics of scripting.

Tutorial 4 is live, where we create our first playable game!
The object is to dodge the cubes for as long as possible without being hit.
In this tutorial, we learn about Instantiate() and InvokeRepeating().

Tutorial #5 is ready, in which we create a rough approximation of Shooty Skies from the knowledge we gained from Cubes!

I’m sure you are quite correct. I realize my preference for text/page based is a minority one, but I often find written tutorials to great resource when looking for something specific. Catlike coding’s are a great example. Video only tutorials are difficult to cull a single bit of knowledge buried in a linear explanation. Not saying written is better by any means, just wish that more intermediate and above tutorials had accompanying text making searching more practical.

Especially when dealing with this type of pointless documentation:
http://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/Handles-currentCamera.html
Seriously? “…and stuff”?

I’ll have to check these out.

Lol. That has to be the greatest comment in the docs ever!

I totally agree with you. As you get more advance text becomes more and more practical. I personally like using Catlike coding and Unity Gems and the like. But beginners love videos. And the majority of Unity users are beginners. At least that I have been able to reach.
