Character animation

Hey everyone. I’m fairly new to Unity and very new to animating. I want to do two things.
(1) I would like to have my character’s upper body do whatever appropriate position and his lower body do whatever appropriate position. If he’s jumping, his legs should stay bent and if he is looking through his scope at the same time, he should look like he is doing that. How can I combine these different animations besides splitting my character in half?
(2) How can I make my player hold the weapons instead of them just hovering over his head? At the moment I just have them as children of the camera so they are always in the right place in relation to the first person view (lower right part of screen).
I’m using the standard soldier, btw.
