Hi - hopefully this is in the right section of the forum. If it’s not, Mods, please feel free to move it to the correct place!
I’m a 3D character artist who, over the years has created a large amount of character assets for personal use, which are currently sitting idle on my hard drive and which I’d love to offer up to the Unity community through the store. You can see a selection of my work on my website at www.samchester.co.uk - most of the characters were built for in-game cinematic use (high poly and texture sizes), but all have lower LODs which could be used for a variety of situations and platforms.
However, looking through the character assets on the store at he moment, there seems to be a lot of comments from people complaining about certain animations not working with the characters they’ve bought for a variety of reasons. All of my characters are rigged, but I am by no means an animator. Would people be interested in buying a character like mine and then buying the animations seperately? If this is the case, how would I go about avoiding the troubles people have had with other characters on the store, and make sure my characters are able to be used with the widest variety of animation packs, with the least amount of trouble? I’ve seen Mixamo has quite a presence on the store - is ripping my rig out (at the moment they’re just 3DS Max default Bipeds) and uploading to Mixamo to get one of their rigs a worthwhile thing to do in such circumstances?
Consider the high-quaily work you do, I don’t think anyone would mind.
As long as they are mechanim ready and you offer support in case some things can go wrong…
I’ll look up some tutorials about preparing a character with Mechanim and put a character up on the store to test the feedback. If it’s positive I’ll definitely start readying my other characters for sale as well as looking into making some characters/ packs which are a bit more Unity store focused.
@NightShade2109 - the UMA system looks really interesting! I’ll have a look into it when I’ve got my first character up and running in the store .
UMA would probably be a bit easier it already works with mecanim with the bone rigging etc… so you could just concentrate on the modeling and texturing.
although there is a slight learning curve with it but all the tutorials are really helpful.
