characters root transform pos Y issues

Hi - I’ve been tussling with getting my characters run cycle working in unity, and I’m almost there,

the final thing (I think) that i cant figure out is how to get his hips height movement to appear. When I play the animation in the preview window the floor moves up and down rather than the character, & no matter what I do I can’t remedy it.

would anybody have any suggestions?

What happens in the scene view? Does the characters feet pass through the ground or does he come off the ground?

i put the model in a scene with an animator on it and the character seemed to move up and down as expected
