Characters with reflective materials

Hi all,

I’m trying to think of a way to handle characters with reflective materials, e.g. metal arms, with sufficient quality but without dropping too much performance. I’m aiming to use global illumination as well.

The parts of my plan which I guess will be nailed down:

  • Baked lights
  • Baked light probes
  • Select metallic smoothness setting that will let us minimise inter-reflections without losing too much quality

But I’m unclear on how to best handle reflections from a dynamic character.

  • SSRR?
  • Attach dynamic reflection probes to all characters?
  • Vary reflection probe resolution by distance from the camera for performance?

I’m worried that multiple reflection probes updating every frame would be too heavy. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
JT

Best in performance is reflection probe. i test it on low-end mobile and works very good on my car (with standard shader)
I had 10-20 reflection probe in my scene for my test

Thanks for your reply. Were they baked or dynamic probes? I’m wondering about situations like whether your car reflects other moving cars (and vice versa).

For mobile devices you may need to use baked mode. I don’t test the realtime mode.
In realtime mode you can attach a reflection probe to your car body. For baked mode you need to place across to your scene and bake them.
