Chat System - UNET vs. IRC Plugin

Hey,

I am working on a FPS coop game where each game should have it’s own private chat room for 2-5 players. Now I was wondering if it is better to implement a UNET based chat or to use some kind of IRC chat-plugin (e.g. something like this drop-in solution). Or maybe even another completely different solution?

In case that UNET relay servers are used, I guess a UNET-based chat would increase costs due to higher bandwidth consumption. So I’m afraid that extensive chatting increases bandwidth-consumption too much, especially since I am working on a coop game which has a higher focus on social aspects.

In contrast, I guess IRC requires its own server(s) and maybe spam bot protection or something?
Are there any things I need to consider for an IRC-based chat?

Which solution would you prefer/recommend and why?

Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

sending a string every 30 seconds is not going to use a lot of BW, but here is few alternatives:

if you want to code yourself more feature like saving:
gamespark or playfab

Why not use Nat Traversal and never worry about bandwidth?

Yepp, I’m planing to use this Nat Traversal plugin indeed. Nevertheless, I am still interested in available solutions and their particular advantages and disadvantages.
