Chinese Font Issues

Unreadable chinese gui text on standalone builds running on older computers.

I am developing a multilingual game in which the gui text needs to either be displayed in English or Chinese. When I create a standalone version of the game and run it on older computers, the chinese text is blurry and unreadable. However, when I switch over to English display mode, the English text looks normal (perfectly readable).

I have tried using several different Chinese fonts, several different font sizes, and differing amounts of anti-aliasing for the text. None of these attempts have eliminated or reduced the problem.

This problem occurs for both Windows and Mac standalone builds, and there are no performance related problems that occur on the older computers. The text, both English and Chinese, displays fine in the editor and in the standalone builds that are run on newer computers.

Perhaps it is related to this issue?

Unfortunately that thread doesn’t seem to have the answer, but it seems like a good idea for you to work together on it.

It’s because newer computers have graphics cards that can have large textures (4096x4096 or higher), while older cards can only do 2048x2048 (or lower). That’s a hardware limitation so I’m afraid there’s not really anything you can do.

If that’s the issue, then perhaps you could use different fonts for Chinese and English so that the characters don’t have to fit on the same texture.
