Chrystanthia - The Game - The Musical.

Hi everyone. This is my first post on the forums.

I wanted to share a project that I’m working on.

I’m a composer / musician, and a game developer. In 1999, I co-wrote a musical - as in, a Broadway show. It premiered in Toronto, Canada, and had a successful run in the theatre. It’s a big show, 2.5 hours long, set in a fantasy world. Think Les Miserables meets Beauty and the Beast.

I’ve always been a game developer as well - In 1995 I got into the industry making games for the original Sony Playstation, and I’ve always split my time between development and music / composition. Starting in 2005, I regularly composed music for the Oprah Winfrey show, until the show ended.

So, I decided to try something - to merge my two worlds, and a few months ago I began development on Chrystanthia - The Game. The premise is that you play the lead character from the show, and the “gimmick”, so to speak, is the fact that musical numbers from the musical will all still be part of the experience. They will present themselves in the form of cut-scenes - with lip-synched performances of the songs by NPCs.

The trick is making something like that work seamlessly, and believably without getting cheesy or hokey.

Anyway, here’s an early preview of the game intro, and some gameplay footage. I thank the asset store for existing.

The game’s site will be further developed at: http://www.chrystanthia.com

Thanks,
Glen

Pretty sweet stuff you got going on here! Love the atmosphere.

Thanks. It’s been a fun experience so far. Most of the gameplay systems / code I custom built. Quest manager, floating text, region titles, projectile combat, spawn system, dynamic lighting / atmosphere changer, and a slew of other things.

Looks good, very well done. I’d like to see the transition from game to musical though.

This looks so good, liking the level design, atmosphere and music

Thanks for the feedback. The epic orchestral music is actually composed by me - I really do split my time between game development and composing.

The transition from the game, into a musical scene is something we’re still working on. The challenge is making it work, without feeling like a hindrance to the player. It should add to the experience, and never detract. We’re also still in the process of recording the musical performances (audio), after which point we’ll be beginning to animate scenes.

That music is simply outstanding! very interested to see the playable version of the game and how gameplay ties in with the soundtrack!
