Cinema 4D and adding polygons

This is probably a basic question, but I can’t find anything with instructions via Google or on the forums here.

I’ve made a doorway in two polygonal walls of a room. I’m trying to patch the inner part of the doorway (i.e. create a polygon between the inner and outer walls). Without the new polygons, it looks like this:

Once I connect the vertices to create a polygon that connects the two walls, it looks like this:

I’ve experimented with different ways to connect them, and it always ends up like this. I found a tutorial for Unreal and C4D that talked about smoothing groups, but when I tried that it either didn’t work, or I set it up incorrectly. What step am I missing?

Thanks!

“Smooth groups” AFAIK still don’t exist in Cinema 4D. You can add edge breaks but apparently those also don’t export too well. I can’t speak for the most recent Cinema Version, unfortunately (I’m still using R11) so maybe edgebreaks even do work now.

Otherwise you may want to calculate the edgebreaks in Unity on import of the model. Set it to a lower angle of about 35. It’s the same thing as the “phong” tag does in cinema - so you can try the proper edge adjustments there.

Hope that helped.
