So I’m new-er to Unity, and I’ve done some searching but I can’t seem to find out what is going wrong with the rigs I have set up.
In a nutshell, I’ve been using Quidam characters/rigs, and pulling their heads off and replacing them with others. This is for a demo, so the heads are a must. The problem I’m hitting is that the new heads attached to the bodies aren’t importing to Unity correctly, but Cinema 4d and Motion Builder are both reading them properly. I’ve been baking EVERYTHING, so the bodies are moving right…but the head is totally off.
Thoughts? Find attached some images of whats going on.
My workflow has been:
find models in Quidam
Use importer to Cinema 4d
Edit Objects in Cinema 4d re attach head
Export .fbx file into motion builder
Merge motion builder .fbx data with C4d, make animation seamless
Just installed the .fbx plug-in for quicktime, and it looks like Cinema is breaking the .fbx file pretty good on export, Unity is importing the data properly…too bad its bad data.
Cinema 4d’s FBX plugin is hit and miss on a per user basis (no two versions of the plugin behave the same for each user) as far as I’ve seen. But I think it has to do with the fact that some versions don’t export bones properly in c4d. Joints seem to work.
You can convert bones to joints using the converter under the character menu. However, if you’re using mocap data (which you must be otherwise you wouldn’t be using bones), then you might be out of luck since c4d can’t transfer mocap data from bones to joints.
Either way, joints should work for you as bones don’t work for me either (but joints do).
The funny part is that Joints DID NOT WANT TO IMPORT AT ALL in the beginning, they were a serious mess. And now bones are kind of working. Joints are NOT WORKING even after baking and using various scripts floating around.
I have a workflow working, its kind of strange.
Out of motion builder I need to Save As, then import the file to cinema, edit the animation, and then re export as an FBX and it works. Cannot use the ‘export’ function out of mo-builder, only the Save As.
