First of all, Hello everyone.
Well, since I got into Game Development, the most fascinating thing in it, was cinematic part. Everytime I see a fantastic looking cinematic trailer for a game, I get goose bumps (lol no, I don’t get sexually aroused). I have seen companies like Digic Pictures, but always wondered about what kind of software do they use? Or if it’s possible to make any kinds of Cinematics in the Unity itself, because I know that UDK has got quite good tools for it.
So I just wanted to talk about this, discuss and learn from you guys
Unless the cinematic was created using the game engine (also known as machinima) usually it is pre-rendered graphics from any of the typical 3D authoring packages like Maya, 3ds Max, Lightwave, or less commonly Cinema 4D or Houdini. Blender is a free alternative. All of these are the same tools you would likely use to make in-game assets.
Many game studios outsource their cinematics to other companies like Blur and Digic Pictures. I think even LucasArts does that, which is kind of amusing considering the resources of Industrial Light Magic and Lucasfilm Animation.
I’m sure Unity has some camera and keyframing tools that would let you choreograph non-interactive scenes for your game. However it might be better to animate certain sequences within, say, Maya and export camera/joint animation if you need more naturalistic animation rather than programatically stitching together looping animations.
I agree, the cinematics can sometimes be the highlight of the game, especially if it is story-driven. I thought that Final Fantasy IX was nothing special in terms of gameplay (and even irritating) but I still enjoyed it due to the outstanding cutscenes. Same goes for some older games where the contrast between the in-game graphics and cinematics was huge.
Thanks for reply, that was a useful information. But I was mainly talking about independent cinematic studios like Blur and Digic as you mentioned. And Unity’s cinematic was a different topic.
I wanted to know, what kind of software does Digic use for example? And does that kind of job have more connection to video gaming industry, or movie industry? Because let’s say if I want to get in some kind of cinematic studio in future, what kind of knowledge do I need? Because as far as I’m concerened, they don’t need programmers there… Mainly my guess should be animators and modelers.
And yes, cinematics play a huge part in gaming IMO. When I watch all those cinematics made by Digic, I want nothing more than to play the game… Btw, if you guys haven’t seen those cinematics, you should just look their website on google (I don’t know if I can post other website links here)
You would need lots of artistic ability, in addition to technical skills like 3d modelling. There’s a ton of different people required to make cinematics like that…it ranges from 3d Artists, animators, shader/physics programmers, directors, compositors…and so on. What exactly would you like to do in this field? Are you interested in 3d Artwork? CGSociety is a terrific site to learn about this kind of stuff, it’s a pretty diverse field.
Lots of the skills required cross over between movies and games. Hope this helps a bit, and good luck!
Hey. Well personally I’m a very bad artist, I can’t draw well
But I always wanted to, and I also always wanted to model, which I hope I’m going to learn well. But for now, I’m studying programming… But as I understood, I will need more artistic skills in that kind of field. Thanks for help.
