So, I am trying to build a city building game, just like SimCity 5. With a bottom navigation bar, just like SimCity. but what I’m really focused on is making a city building game that you can use downloaded assets for buildings, not default shapes like cubes and spheres. What would be nice is building flexible roads of different choices of types of roads. So I need help on scripting. I’ve tried about 23 times in JavaScript and I still can’t figure it out (scripting). Optionally, this community of unity can come in and help me come up with a scripting way to charge hourly expenses for buildings that the player places. And earn simoleons for zoning residential, Commercial, or Industrial. If we work together, I could build and publish a famous city building game!
Publishing: PC application (.exe)
Unity Version: Unity Free 4.3.1f1
Platform: Windows 8.0
Well, I’d be interested in helping… BUT given that this is your first post, and your question sounds very vague, I’m not convinced that it will be worthwhile spending my time on it. I’d suggest getting a prototype up using standard cubes/spheres, then asking more specific questions.
Oh, and I am obligated to refer you to this thread: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/184797-The-answer-to-every-Can-it-be-done-and-I-ve-lost-my-way-post
Cool city story, but I suggest you start with scripting a Pong clone, then perhaps a Pacman clone, then move up from there.
Sounds like you’re being over amibitious for your current skillset.
what do you actually bring to the project?
I made lots of projects, but never shared them.
When I’m done, I’ll publish it on my website for a purchase item.
Don’t buy the City Builder Starter Kit, thats my advice…
Thanks for that advice. I was about to buy it.
No problem, it would require quite a bit of additional code to get something like Sim City 5 going, and wouldn’t be suitable for someone who has tried to code 23 times.
Well, I have tried more, but only 23 times on this project.
So I’ve tried practicing more JavaScript, and I’m thinking I’ve got it down pretty good for first time in games. I have worked with 496 lines of JavaScript on my html website. Now, I need to stick with gaming for now.
Help! I can’t figure what code tutorial to look at. Please help me find one.
Anyone???
Anybody out there???
OK, I am getting very impatient now, if somebody hasn’t found something please let me know.
No one is going to build your game for you.
Your skill level in Unity does not seem advanced enough for you to build it on your own.
I would suggest starting with some basic Unity tutorials such as:

Its a long journey, either one way or the other you have to realise that you need a foundation of skills to build on.
I have an epic game idea, but after 5 years of coding and art (and a lot of enjoyable projects I must say) I still realise that its pointless to start on my epic game idea(s) until I have the time/money/skills to progress them. Otherwise they will become epic disappointments.
Try a new idea, the simplest idea you can, and work through that.
You cant be a racecar driver without first passing your learners. Nothing easy was ever worthwhile.
Have you looked at these?
As for the starter kits, some people don’t like them, but they’re not a bad place to start if you’re totally new.
Just be aware that you’ll have to make large modifications to them to make them do what you want.
And as some people have said, a city builder is pretty big for a first project. For instance, the code to properly lay out roads is in no way trivial. So pick something simpler first.
And no, I am not building a shooting game. I am a pacifist. ![]()
