Closing a thread should always require an explanation

Hello,

I just noticed that a thread (Illegal Unity Licenses…) was closed without any explanation. I don’t want to complain about it, but would just like to ask the moderators to always write a “final post” in a thread when they close it, to explain the reasons why, even if it may be obvious. I believe this should be a common rule, and it makes for a nicer community.

Thanks

i agree

I also agree, but most of the time it is very apparent or it violates the rules of Gossip.

I thought it was rather obvious why it was closed. The thread turned into a back and forth philosophical argument between Pro and Anti piracy camps. Some posters were getting a bit hostile in the thread and that tends to get plenty threads locked down in any forum.

I’m not complaining about that thread in particular being closed, and I understand why it happened. I just think that an explanation, even if obvious, is a very nice rule of behaviour for every case.

Actually I’m quite sure that it was said early that it was going to be closed. But yes, a final post is a nice attitude from the MODs. Just to clarify the things.

Also, in some communities they add a link to the rule related to the closing of the topic, so the users begin to know the rules better.

As every thread on the internet that dares to mention the word “piracy” in it. Which is sad tbh, especially in a developer forum, where people are supposed to live from selling their assets.

Uh, please, I know this is all in good faith, but let’s not switch the topic to piracy/pirates in any way, or this thread will get closed too

And without any explanation

Anyway, welcome to the forum democracy: a mod/admin can do whatever he wants with your posts. He can even blast your avatar to the void and even the mighty google will forget about you over time.

PS. Yes is polite to drop an explanation, but consider the fact that this is a huge forum plenty of things to moderate and sometime there is not enough time to be polite.

I was quite surprised was well, but I am disappointed that my thread became a hotbed of flame wars… It was not intended to be such.

Ok, where are the pirates ?

I respect moderator’s work. My personal opinion is that moderators can be “polite” and effective. It takes 5 minutes to write something along the lines " I decided to close this thread because…" and can save much time and fuss on the long run.

I think they should leave a final reason too. I mean, why do we have tutorials on such simple and obvious games? because some people might not know what to do.

Just a simple line that would take 5 seconds to write saying why. why not?

Leaving explanations for closing threads seems to be the general approach around here. I think you found the one exception.

I generally do leave an explanation when closing a thread, but sometimes it slips my mind and/or it’s just obvious. Discussions on pirated software are against the forum rules, and it just turned into useless bickering. Sorry I didn’t add an explanation in.

Thanks for jumping in Aurore. I’m sorry if I just happened on an exception and made a big fuss about it

No, its pretty obvious why 99% of threads are closed. The illegal licenses one was stupid to began with( this is not the morality forum , and UT shouldn’t tell pirates what will happen if/when their caught . )

Plus its a forum, your thread get closed , that means its time to actually get to work and start writing code
