I intend to go. This is currently my last year of high school, and I will soon be going to College. However, I am wondering, should I take a year off of school, or go straight to it?
People tell me that if I don’t go straight away, I may never… So I am leaning more to going straight away, but I am wondering on other peoples opinions on this.
A year off is not as fun as it may sound. You will quickly find yourself bored to tears, and it will be even worse if your friends go straight to college. But even if you have a whole gaggle of buddies to take the year off with you, you will get sick of seeing them within 6 months I promise you that.
When I took my year off I used the time to teach myself programming, but if I didn’t have that to occupy myself with I would have gone mad with boredom like the rest of my friends. About 5 months into my groups “year off”, 5 of the 8 of them got full time jobs, and the rest signed up for second semester community college classes. -_-
Unless you have the money to travel or party, I would say skip the 1 year off business.
I never had a problem keeping myself entertained while taking a year(s) off. I once quit my job just for the hell of it and was unemployed for a year or so. I still think that was the best time of my life. Career wise that’s not very good for you though. That is because the people who do the hiring and firing do not have the nerve to do something like that and do not appreciate people who do. So if you are a job person, or intend to be one in the future, go to college/university.
Looking for motivation to go to college? Work in a factory for a year. Worked for me. I later took a year off after college and before joining the rat race. No regrets there. My advice would be to do the same. Somethings, like upper level math, will be hard to remember after playing for an entire year. Better to get into it while it’s fresh.
go right for it, the earlier you get your degree the earlier you can start your life, taking a year off will just delay the inevitable.
on a 2nd note this technology/field moves really fast. I’m just starting my career and it took me about a year to find a decent job offer, in that case think about that as your year off. usually after school you dont just jump into your career, but when the opportunity comes youll be ready for it
Heh, maybe you should try it too someday to get even . I would have quit my job whether or not there was welfare involved but seriously speaking I pay taxes too and get very little in return. I have also worked with many government agencies and I have to say that much of what they do is just flushing money down the toilet. I no longer have much respect for those people or the various institutions and since I’m not involved in the money decisions which involve my tax money, I have no moral problems taking back at least a tiny portion of it one way or the other.
I once quit my job as Lead and went off round Ireland with my mountain bike + tent for a few months. Was just awesome!
On topic… I went to straight to Uni, I knew I’d have got bored hanging out with my friends and probably wouldn’t have done anything other than waste those 12 months.
