Hello! i want to showcase my new rhythm game prototype: Color dash!
Link to itch.io: Color dash by Developer3244
Color dash is a rhythm game about dodge colorfull bright obstacles in beautifull worlds in order to pass the levels and reach the portal (at moment a plus-shaped thing)
Game have actually 3 levels (dancefloor, link and my heart, all NCS sounds), and some obtacles, like pink blocks, rotating spinners, patroling floor and obstacles, and some other treats to kill you. At moment it have a bit tricky difficulty, sorry about that
Im putting the game here for get some feedback. Does some obstacles feel too weird? Is the game too hard? Also i want to track the changes i made.
II started this project a long time ago. It was called “Hunter journey” (however due to some changes i made in prodution this name lost sense), and it was almost equal to this, but it was pretty messed up and later than some time i deprecated it. I tried to create other project, and it just got more messed up.
After some time i tried to do other game, a PC one. And im working with intense graphics based games (particulary forests) so i tried to do a beautifull one. After some time i made some environments (of the level “link” after a while), and later decided to take back the old project. I got this
Just saying i updated my game, changes here:
-
Added 2 levels, drakkar (lvl 4) and spoil (lvl 5)
-
Changed dancefloor’s terrain to a boring neon blue to a metalic blue terrain
-
Changed link’s neon paths color from bright blue to bright green, for making link’s pallete more natural and closer to a forest
-
Dancefloor and my heart have an attempt of a collectible now. Dont waste your time, you cant collect them (they may kill you or make song asynced). I tried to do a collectible system that rewards player for getting a harder path in order to get something, but i didnt finihed the collectible system
I didnt liked too much the UIs of the game, they dont feel part of the game, or even part of any kind of music game, but im bad on UIs so here is what i got.
I found a glitch excluive to webgl version that makes UI weird when you die. As i need to build the game to see it, and a build in my snail pc can take an hour (literally), i dont know when, how, or if i will fix it.
Also i discovered that my obstacles bright much less in webgl version than in my unity, perhaps due to some quality and lightning settings i had on my build player. I guess nothing i should really care
I updated again the game:
- Added 2 levels: dreamer (new easiest level) and UFO (between drakkar and spoil)
I guess i already have levels enough. For now i will start polishing more the levels (just a skybox and some post procesing arent everything), finish the collectibles, make portal better, upgrade UI perhaps and do some bug fixing.
Another update:
-
finally added collectibles. At moment there is no reason for why players would collect them, i may be working in bonus levels later. (tip: for me dancefloor’s collectible is the easiest and UFO’s one the hardest)
-
i was concerned if players would find my game unfun because they didnt knew what to do. If this happens, there is an “about” button with the controls, how to win/lose, and a peronal tip. However if players use too much it i guess i will need to make game more self-explanatory
-
fixed an error that caused the level “spoil” to get parcially pink. Dont know what happened, but i fixed it
Game have officially one week today! it may be too early for say that but perhaps my game is starting to get ready for a first serious build. Is the first serious build of my first serious game, it dont need to be perfect.
I know some players saw this game. I dont know exactly where to go from now. So what about saying at least one thing game can get better? Do you didnt liked it? say one thing you didnt liked. Liked? so say one thing you liked. Just for i get a clear vision to where should i go if i decide to start my first build.
If i decide to get my first build, i will need NCS authorization. They already gave me once for another smaller project. I need it for this project. I need help for making credits UI better. I need to credit author of the songs (and even want to).
I didnt upload new update because taking builds is a boring process. I guess i fixed webgl death screen error (camera was set to “uninitialized” instead of “solid color”), and i remade the credits menu a bit, its more readable. I didnt made nothing on levels today.
Im starting to get bored with this project. I dont want to break it as i made in hunter journey, but i dont know what should i do for now. I will make another licence request form in NCS, if everything goes right i will upload this somewhere. In matter of the base of the game, i think game is ready to be played, as the core of the game was finished.
Is sad to see that my game will not become a banger even after the effort i put on it, but eh thats the game dev life :). I will either wait and try to showcase my game in more places for increasing its popularity or stop it and put it in my portfolio. I dont have one, but that would be cool.
Some amazing devs in forums here said that is better having a lot of playable garbage to show what you can and want to do than trying to be perfect and failing, so i guess color dash is a good starting point.
I will not deprecate it as i almost made in hunter journey, and as i put real effort on it, i will stop its production only after the first release.
Im not being too early as game jams are here for make game dev make game prototypes very fast and are still considered part of the game development thing. TING was originally made for ludum dare and now is a good puzzle game i like lol.
Edit: my next update may be its first release
Idk if is only me but it seems that unity play new update put my game to its first release again. Im going to rebuild it later, and try to update it again for the newest version.
Now, i may start another project in the meantime. I submited the form, i just need to wait for confirmation.
After some time i decided to come back to my game.
I passed a long time without playing it so i came here as a beginner would, and first thing i decided to make is an easier first level. Also im changing the levels UI so i can freely add more levels with no panel restriction
I also considered making a mobile build with slightly different controls, but is a bit hard lol. Those things slow down the build a bit and im going to get a bit more time in them.
I found an annoying glitch where unity crashes everytime i open a heavier scene, like a level in my game. I can open those scenes in unity itself but if i enter play more and enter in the level by my UI, unity crashes. It seems to be related to my pc’s potato superpower, but is a bit hard to act in my UI scenes now :c
I want to finish my controls and make a mobile build, im starting to consider working harder in this and perhaps make it my first real game. Or not, as i dont assume anyone is seeing this thread XD
No guys i didnt died or lost (all) my motivation. I worked on other games on the meantime but well, i basically worked on rhythm games everytime i stoped a project. But bruh it took me months to realize that rhythm games are complex games by nature, and furthermore rhythm games with complex mechanics are overkill for solo beginners. Pro tip: just make a rhythm game when you have some games on itch.io first.
My motivation ran out and i almost decided to give up from game development itself. But im a game dev by nature so i decided to make something i already considered but never thought that would be a good idea: i made a game in two hours. I knew i wouldnt be able to make a rhythm game so i made the simplest game idea i had in my mind. And suprisingly, unlike most of my year projects… i finished it. I found so cool to finish a game that i decided to get all my abandoned non-rhythm game projects and publish them AS IS (got it?).
Back to color dash, one of those games was this one (although it really is a rhythm game). You can play it on itch.io now: Color dash by Developer3244
What i made:
- finished tutorial level blank
- added a difficulty indicator for the levels
- made one thing or two in the levels
I will use this thread as a devlog, instead of real motivation source, but in any case, if you want to play and give feedback… is free and makes you feel a kind person helping a noob
My two hour game: Rush by Developer3244
Is almost the same game you previously played
but is a great game
I didnt made nothing on this game but on the meantime i finished an old project (also a rhythm game lol) and updated my 2 hour game. Also, i made some videos of the levels of the game in my channel: Emerald Games - YouTube
Sometimes i think about getting one of my projects and transforming it into a serious project, but making big games need big effort, and i wont put lots of effort in a game until i get sure is a good game. So for now im in a routine of finishing old projects and trying to get attention. My small game with more attention can become my first big game.
After all the journey i had with this game, idk if i need to say but color dash i the game with the biggest chance of growing, but i have other projects i see with good eyes too. Also, this may be a bit too early to start something big.
My second rhythm game: Arrow Beat by Developer3244
And lol the first reply to my thread…
Lol my thread had no replies for months and now two people said my game was great and interessing XD
For the first time i had a playtester, and result was unexpected. Dude suffered on level blank - which was supposed to be a tutorial level - but the same dude is a 9 years old kid, so i already expected a bit more pain. On other hand, im the developer of the game, so perhaps is me being too skilled. I need a bit of feedback indeed, is my game too hard? Also, i watched a lot of videos about game design, and blank seems to be a good tutorial level.
Updates:
- Added 2 levels: coming home and power up (both between drakkar and UFO)
- Dancefloor officially have more UFOs than the level UFO (and by UFO i mean unindentified flying/floating object)
- Made level dreamer a bit better… by removing details lol
- Added a gold to dreamer too
- Made a small design fix in blank
- All levels now have pink pillars on them. So… why? there is a level called UFO in my game, it may be related to aliens…
*As a reminder, all level names i said on the thread are NCS songs
I made a pretty cool update in the game: remade the UI scene for levels. The levels UI is much more modern and cooler (and you must download my game to see the new UI! link: Color dash by Developer3244). Also, rip the dificulty indicators, now the levels are sorted from easiet to hardest. Im trying to make a new easy level, but im still unsure about the dificulty of this game. Also, i made screenshots for the game, you can see a bit of the levels on itch.io now. (and forget unity play, webgl version of this game was deprecated a long time ago)
Lol 11 days for a single feature
Yes, the game had a minor update although this long time. Game now saves your progress! you can play the time you want, close the game, and you will still have the same progress as before! In the context of this game (and of the majority of the games nowadays), this will be a huge step that can lead me to good features
Now, the first feature that data saving allowed me to do are bonus levels. Remember that golds that you didnt even cared about? Collecting 5 of them will unlock a secret bonus level! (and the bonus levels dont appear in the same UI as the main levels, good luck to find it and unlock it).
I also made a new easy main level: fearless pt.II (because the part two is more popular than the part one
), between dreamer and dancefloor.
Very few updates but important ones: songs fade away smoother, and i updated the videos in my channel to the newer versions (in exchange of a highly annoying lag i have no clue how to fix in a potato
)
I feel like is time to give color dash some time alone and start some other stuff, i already worked on it for like a month and i already have other game ideas. Also, for now i want to focus more on making color dash more known and maybe start other projects to have more games on my portifolio.
At least, this time im not deprecating a project for lack of motivation and fun without finishing it. Game even saves your data forever, something i always wanted to make but never even understood how.
Last thing: march of 2025, game will make its first year!
