Combase is constantly crashing the editor. I’ve put in two bug reports that were closed instantly. I’ve searched everywhere and can’t find anything on this. Support stated: “The issue is related to the ComBase, which is a 3rd party package. Currently, Unity does not support 3rd party packages, thus, we recommend contacting the developer of that package for further assistance”.
Previously, I had been told by support to upgrade my Unity version, which I did.
I cannot find anything on this. Log states “Got a UNKNOWN while executing native code.”
The editor crashes when dragging and dropping things in general.
Edit: I do not have any ComBase package. If they’re saying combase.dll is crashing Unity I don’t understand.
Have you contacted the Combase developers for support?
I don‘t even know what Combase is, never heard of that before. Google brings up a cash register system and a microbial database.
hang on, you dont know what it is? well, its not something ive seen either, so, its not a default part of unity… so, somewhere, something you did must have installed it…
combase.dll is core part of Windows, and is loaded into pretty much any GUI application. It does not make applications crash.
How did you come to conclusion that it’s to blame? What did you say in your bug report? I wonder if QA was also confused on what it was and misunderstood the report. Do you have a bug number?
The editor crash log got wiped on restart with temp files, when it happens again I’m going to save a copy and upload it.
QA told me “The issue is related to the ComBase, which is a 3rd party package”. Seeing it in the log makes sense if it’s part of any GUI app, but I searched for packages that might use that name and can’t find any. Makes me think there’s something wrong with my graphics if that’s the case. It’s IN-53292. In my reports I stated the editor crashed when drag and dropping prefabs from the resource folder or in the hierarchy. Not always, but when it happens it’ll happen back-to-back maybe 2-3 times on restarting Unity.
Following up on this, I saved a copy of the log as it happened again. Here you can see how once DoDragDrop starts, it leads to it crashing. It seems completely random.
Hey we’re still scratching our head around this. Seems to be super rare - we haven’t had many reports of this issue. How often are you running into this?
I’d say at least once a week, when it happens it’ll go 2-3 times the same day, then back to normal for a few days. I look for anything in common when it happens but it seems completely random.
Posting for closure, I’ve gotten a new computer and rebuilt the project on a new hard drive using an exported package and the problem has stopped. I think my old computer was having failure with graphics for whatever reason, but it would act like a memory leak after running the profiler trying to figure this out. I would see ridiculous spikes, like 60k ms on the editor with no clear explanation.
I have this very often in a latest project. Not sure if it is for Unity or because of AVPro or ZED Mini plugins.
The bug report was closed as an external issue, but if you want to check it out: IN-65929
Geez, I’m sorry about that bug response. I have some talking to do..
In any case, this issue, while also happens within the combase component, is quite distinct from the original issue discussed in this thread. I can’t immediately tell what causes it, but I can see that the project loads quite a few native plugins - as you mentioned. Did you try removing one or both to them temporarily to see if the crashes go away?
Following up, it’s happening again on the new computer, so I 100% know it’s not my computer at this point. It’s happening when dragging and dropping prefabs into variable slots or the scene view. Same issue. That seems to be the root cause of the crash; going to drag and drop from the hierarchy* or browser into the scene or variable slots.
if its happening on a new computer, and many of us are using unity without issue, it boils down to either
a) the project
b) the environment - eg, antivirus, onedrive, google drive, and all the other optional extras you may or may not have. (fancy mice, keyboards etc)
dont get me wrong, windows can be a jerk, and unity can pitch a fit too, so it always hard to be left stuck in the middle.
One thing I would try if it happened to me would be to make a new project, and build up to your current project by adding bits slowly, or individually for some of the plugins, to see if you can nail it to one plugin causing the fit, if this is not successful and a blank project does it, then start on windows… disable anything i could in windows that is non standard windows, and i mean everything, (especially antivirus programs - ive seen an antivirus crash a screen saver that came with windows because it was a jerk) if it stops being annoying then individually go through turning them on…
as an example… i had a huge issue with webgl and zonealarm - where the pressing of keys in game somehow annoyed zonealarm and only like 1 in 10 of a key press (especially when trying to move) was sent to the game … of course the unity response was “not us” and zonealarm said the same as neither technically did anything wrong but they didnt play well… even though i could make any computer do it by doing the install.
