Common practice for equip able clothing?

Hi I’m wonder what is the common practice for having equip able clothing, such as an RPG game, in Unity today?

I would assume you have to rig and skin the characters with every armor in the game,
and just hide everything but the cloth that is equipped.

However, I’m not sure about the common practices for hiding the underlying mesh.
Is it slicing up the character into bodyparts which can be hidden (wouldn’t that create render seams)?
Is it using an alpha mask, or how do you do this?

Several solutions are used for your specific question.

Yes I have, are you referring to anything specific?

I find solutions dating back to 2012 and earlier…

I’m looking for common practices (and possible constraints) regarding that in today.

As far as I know the practices are still relevant.
Body parts - clothes - same difference.
This is one solution.
