Compare Chart?

Hi,

iam currently searching the whole website to find a compare chart between the indy and pro version. Of course I know that indy does not allow commercial production, but which are the other limitations between the 2 versions?

Thank you!

Shadows are a Unity Pro-only feature.
Video playback is a Unity Pro-only feature.
The Unity Assset is an add-on product for Unity Pro only.

Ahh thank you!

i didnt saw that.

Sadly that there is no movie support in indy version :frowning:

Wouldnt it be possible that you release addons like (movie support) for a specific fee so that indy people are able to upgrade there version to a version with movie support for example?

Does the technology exist to do such a thing? Sure. But it’s not something we particularly want to do as it requires unique serialization and activation for every possible combination of features (as I assume it goes beyond video support and in to every possible pro-only feature once we move beyond this discussion) and that means a procession of serial numbers as you buy additional features (whereas today you might have two, one for Indie then get another if you upgrade to Pro). It’s just not something we’ve wanted to do as until now the Indie/Pro breakdown has been working quite well.

Such a thing could probably be done, but actually making work is not a simple effort by a long shot. we’d rather spend the time making Unity better than implementing complex licensing schemes…

I had no idea video was a Pro-only feature.

Ok, so we don’t presently have a playback head, so that’s meaningless to me right now. But if UT does add this, then I am going to be pretty peeved. Right now, I am doing all I can to get a portfolio (music and music for locked picture) website going, running almost entirely as a Unity web player. When I get hired, one of the first purchases I want to make is Unity Pro…

I need video to get Unity Pro.
I need Unity Pro to have video.

I hate it.

That’s not correct, actually.

Yeah, we are currently into the very same situation. Maybe it would be possible taht indy can only display specific resolution of videos and pro can play them all inkl. streaming from www.

Okay may I correct myself, endy is normally considered as low-budget commericals. Right?

From an old page I remember reading, I believe the limit is on total business income(revenue?) for the year? $100,000+ or something makes you not an indy. Otherwise, it’s all good, and there are no restrictions. If you are making that much on games and still too stingy to buy pro, however, I don’t understand you. :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, if it were me, I wouldn’t even consider using a still unpopular plug-in for a portfolio page. If a potential employer has to download a plug-in, they may just go on to the next person and not give it a second thought. (Why is this guy using proprietary stuff? Meh. NEXT!)

Are you suggesting Unity with video is the ONLY way to make a site displaying your talents? That’s very odd to me because I know 99.999% of people in your situation do NOT use Unity or need it at all to get a job. Huh.

What’s the compelling reason not to use the other popular web media solutions?

Yeah, something like that. As far as I am concerned, this is no limit. (I’d buy a Pro license long before I ever came anywhere close to that…)

I make music and sound effects for games and integrate that with 3D content. No one else I have seen in this industry has an interactive 3D site. I see no better way to display my talents than small, real-time examples.

I’m not interested in the other solutions (though I may incorporate alternate content at a later time) because I don’t like wasting my time. Working with Unity is enjoyable to me and forces me to acquire and practice relevant skills.

If the employer isn’t interested in this, then I’m not interested in the employer. Essentially, the job I want is a continuation of what I am doing with the site.

(I am actually using Unity, Flash, and JavaScript together to get around the playback and video issue. I am well aware of usability issues, but am simply targeting a very specific crowd.)
