Okay so a little context here, i recently did Mesh Baker which increased performance of my game around 50-75%. However it seems somehow that has made the performance differ a lot between standalone and playing in editor! It’s almost as if the game actually runs better in editor even though i use same resolution and highest quality there as well.
So i made the standalone and tested it, and yes i do have VSync turned on, and i do also only run 144 fps which is what my monitor is limited to. But it seemed like the standalone was using so many resources and my computer started making noises it has never done before!
Should i make the fps limit via script instead of using VSync ? And has anyone else experienced something like this ?
My specs are the following:
GTX 1080
32 GB DDR4 Ram
I7 6700k 4.0-4.2 GHz
But i have played plenty of other games both much more demanding ones and many which aren’t. And none of those makes it do those noises! I have a feeling it’s because the GPU has nothing to do because the game relies a lot more on the CPU that it start to makes those weird noises…
There’s nothing “weird”. Powerful hardware produces lots of heat while under load. If you made a 100% silent air-cooled PC by removing the fans, your GPU and CPU would melt in a few minutes when gaming. That’s why they have fans on them, and fans make noise. Fan noise is not a good way to determine how well-optimized your game is, that’s a job for the Profiler. Also, since you’re developing on a 1080, note that many people have worse cards (I have a GTX960) and still want to play. So try to accommodate for worse cards as well.
Hey yeah i get that, but the noise it made seriously made me think my GPU was about to melt or something! It was not normal in any way. And as i’ve said earlier i’ve played lots of other games more and less demanding and they don’t seem to cause the same problem, so it is something specific about this and not my build so to say
So that’s why I said you should look in the Profiler: Something in your game is taking more CPU or GPU than it should. It’s the start of a huge topic called game optimization.
But the weird thing is this happened after i optimized the game! I don’t at any point even get close to my screen limit hence why i turned VSync on. However i made all trees, details and props into combined meshes which maybe somehow affects performance in another way… However i have gone through profiler only thing i did further to optimize was moving reflection on my water which took quite a lot. However after i did that it seems the noises actually started
