…What kind of game is it?

Hello, and welcome to the Unity Community! Enjoy your stay! Here’s some information on all the platforms I know of.

I’ve never targeted Flash myself, but I heard that it wasn’t exactly ideal. I may be wrong, but you probably won’t make back your $400 there. Ads on flash games just don’t provide that much money.

In regards to iOS mobile, you may make back your $400, but you may not. There are so many new apps coming to the Apple app store every day, you will most likely go unnoticed. Unless of course, your game is really good. iOS is one of the more profitable platforms, so I’d recommend at least checking it out.

Android users are notorious for not buying anything. If you want more details, there’s a discussion about the profitability of the Android platform going on right here: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/171369-Is-Android-Worth-It-New-Report-from-AppAnnie

As for PC/Mac/Linux, this is probably where you should attempt to export to first, mainly because there’s no cost to export to these platforms, so anything you make will be a profit, really(unless you have other expenses). On one hand, the PC/Mac/Linux marked isn’t continuously cluttered like the iOS store, but on the other hand, there’s no unified store to be in in the first place, so unless people google your game, they’re not likely to find it. It is one of the more profitable platforms, but again, your game has to be actually something people want to buy, and it has to be marketed well.

One does not simply “submit your game to Steam”. Steam is notorious for their rigorous selection process; they only let the best of the best games onto their store. If they don’t think your game is going to sell over $10,000 or so, they won’t let you in. Right now though, Steam doesn’t even let indies apply to their selection process, instead you have to go through Steam Greenlight. This involves submitting your game to an online gallery where people can look at it, and vote on whether or not they want to see it in the store. If enough people vote yes (we’re talking about thousands and thousands of people here), then Steam will allow your game into their store. If not however, you’re out of luck. Only a handful of games ever get greenlighted, so unless your game is ridiculously good, it’s not likely that you will be able to get on the Steam store.

Just an FYI, you can’t target consoles either unless you have official approval from the makers of said consoles, and usually around $10,000 to spend on each license. So yeah, that’s not really an option for most people :stuck_out_tongue:

Hope that helps!

If you are a beginner I would like to suggest that you start with PC. It’s easier to setup the input for that platform rather than any touch devices which you have to setup the control almost from scratch.

MarigoldFleur i cant give you full description about the game but consider it a side scroller action shooter game.
and
Code_Of_Honour thanks, that was very helpful and think, if i target for pc, can’t we make a special website for the game where we can sell it ? advertise ourselves ? may be put a demo so that people can play it and if they like can can purchase it ? thanks

Of course you can. This is the route most people aiming for PC go. Make a website, upload a trailer and some gameplay videos on YouTube, maybe try to get some game journalists to review the game, etc. Demos always help too. And you can set up a purchase system so people can buy the game directly from your website. Most web hosting companies offer this functionality.

ok thanks  first i was thinking to buy flash license, you saved my time and money .that really helped man

No problem. Good luck with your game!

Since they’ve covered most stuff, I’ll answer your question about Steam. There’s something called “Steam Greenlight”. That may or may not get you on Steam. The community votes on whether you get on steam. Personally, I wouldn’t try for my first game, because it’s $100 and you may or may not get in. Once you do something bigger then a side-scroller, I’d try. Just my two cents.

It sounds like you’re making a shootemup of sorts… would do well mostly on a bigger screen I’d say, PC/Mac/Linux or webplayer or maybe something like Ouya.
