In light of the Connecticut (USA) tragedy, I am no longer going to work on FPS games or games containing violence.
I appreciate your empathy, but kids have been shooting each other long before FPS games.
Good to see someone take a stand on principles. Don’t let the naysayers get you down.
Dont do that its not going to Bring the victims back
Hmm. Tuff subject. Thanks for your honorable effort to change your behavior in a way that you believe is helpful.
Spec Ops: The Line.
An FPS with a societal benefit; education on mental stability.
And thank you for not changing your behavior since you wouldn’t find it helpful (for people who play video games).
Don’t censor yourself you didn’t cause the Shooting.
Now I am going to make TWO FPS games so kids everywhere won’t miss out on their daily dose of FPS!
It is unfortunate but ultimately it takes mental confusion and a degree of insanity to act violently based on something you played in a game. It’s not the game itself that causes anything, but a decision in that person’s mind to use the game as justification or to model their thoughts on. It takes more mental discipline and, well, sanity, in order to not fall into that. That can be more challenging when presented with deliberately tempting/violent-looking scenarios on a screen, IF you are susceptible to/sensitive to being affected by it, which requires that underlying mental vulnerability and delusion. So you could take away all the stupid violent games out there it would solve part of the problem but who is looking at what’s happening in people’s minds and helping their mind to heal from various states of insanity? That’s where the real problem is. But yeah, there’s something to be said for not exposing volatile-minded individuals with material that is likely to play into their issues.
Well, it’s certainty your choice to do as you feel, but you seem to be insinuating that “violent” games (and possibly other media?) cause real life violence. Go to prison and do a survey of how many are avid gamers. Then do that same survey anywhere else outside of prison with the same age range and gender, if video games cause violent behavior it stands to reason we should see a disproportionate number of gamers in prison to non or casual gamers.
From personal experience as a gamer that has played and enjoyed many “violent” games, I have never had the idea in my life to do something based on what I saw in a video game. I have never associated with other gamers that I felt were being influenced negativity by the games we play and I have played with many other gamers.
People who don’t care to look at the facts and science will often seek a “one cause” explanation. It’s easy to blame games that ***depict violence (not sure what “games ***containing violence” are, as a video game cannot contain actual violence). What is not easy is to break down all the variables that lead to the dynamics that cause various forms of violent behavior among different people. Violence is usually caused by some combination of ignorance, natural chemistry and a feeling that one has been treated unfair or put in an intolerable situation.
Agreed , tough topic,…but my 2 cents:
I say don’t try to simply avoid it.
Tackle it,.
make your FPS. Have violence,…it’s gonna be out there no matter what.
BUT
Craft it in such a way as to not sensationalize it,.make sure there are real consequences. Empathy,.promote that.
Have real reasons,…not just blood thirsty vengeance. Give the player alternate paths and reward them for it. Positive reinforcement for doing something honorable( in know,.subjective).
But just taking away a gun isn’t as effective or long lasting as demonstrating ‘how’ or ‘why’ taking away a gun is a better more satisfying solution, imho.
To build on that, taking the gun out of a game does much less to promote non-violence than having the character put the gun down himself. Without depicting a violent subject there is no context to show the reasons that violence should be avoided.
THIS. And yes, this was a horrific tragedy, but there are FAR WORSE things in the world to worry about… I will not be insensitive, but at the same time, I refuse to compromise my creativity because of heinous events… yes, it does bother me a lot that many children lost their lives in CT, but the same thing is happening daily in war torn countries. You can have the violence in the game, but make sure it is there for a reason…
You have to understand American society to see the real problem . If you THINK you need help , and you have no money , you can’t just see a psychologist . The medicines to stabilize a mentally ill person can run well into thousands per month , if you can’t afford it tough luck . No other “rich” nation is like this , here poor sick often just stay sick …
AND you have this insane gun culture , talk about banning magazines with more then 15 rounds and you’ll have protesters screaming the marxist is taking our guns .
Lastly your not going to change anything , do what your heart says , but ask EA to stop making FPS’s and see what they tell you .
And thank goodness they scream about it, too. It’s much better than having guns be only in the hands of criminals, and not having an armed populace in case of terrorism. You can argue that there isn’t much terrorism and so we don’t need guns. But I’ll just argue that there isn’t much terrorism because we have guns. Nobody wants to try to invade the country that has 88 guns per every 100 people.
Yeah… but you don’t need a 30 round mag for self defense
Why aren’t all these terrorists invading Japan? The UK? Canada? An armed populace is not worth the lives of innocent schoolchildren, for the sake of your delusional power fantasy of fending off an invading terrorist force that is never going to happen.
Let’s all keep a cool head here in this discussion alright? Thanks ![]()
This.
The second amendment was written when a good solider could only fire a single round a minute , theirs no reason a normal person should have legal access to an assault riffle .
DON’T BLAME GAMES , EVERIt’s people who can’t admit they don 't need an AR-15 who cause this madness to continue .
