Connecting Hololens to PC for Live Streaming without outside internet access

Hi All. I posted this on MS’s Mixed Reality forum, but am getting no traction. I’m hoping someone here will have a suggestion.

We need to demo a Hololens application in a secure environment. This means we can’t connect the Hololens or a PC to the outside internet - although we can use a router to connect devices together via WiFi.

Unfortunately, in this configuration, when the Hololens connects to the router and discovers it can’t talk to the outside world - it quits talking all together (no IPv4 address, etc…). Unless it can see the outside world through its access point, it won’t communicate with the PC that is also connected to that access point.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get this to work? It doesn’t appear as though I can assign a static IP to the Hololens, and the Hololens just won’t keep the IP assigned to it by the router (when it can’t see the outside world).

Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Is your PC using Windows 10? If so, I would suggest connecting the PC to the access point. Then enable WiFi Hotspot on your Windows 10 device and connect the HoloLens to the PC Hotspot. The HoloLens should continue talking to the PC and you eliminate a hop which will make the stream more stable and allow for better quality. I think it requires the Windows 10 device be on the Anniversary update or higher.

you can assign a static ip address in you router’s dhcp settings, using the HoloLens’ MAC address. An internet connection is not required, unless you want to use Siri.
