Should I be able to connect the profiler to a windows phone using Unity running on mac os?

Hi,
I can’t see why it wouldn’t be. Just make sure you can ping the device from inside the Windows VM.
You should also be able to attach directly from OS X editor too.

Yes I can ping from windows, however the device doesn’t appear in the drop down menu in Unity.
On Mac OS, the device appears in the drop down menu, but nothing happens when I try to connect to it.
I built the game using Windows Phone 8 from Unity, with Development Build on.

That is strange. I suppose the game is running? Did you try connecting directly to IP from Windows Editor? I actually never tried attaching OS X editor profiler to Windows Phone, but I can’t see why it wouldn’t work.
Problem solved. I still can’t connect to the game on Windows (inexplicably) but I updated unity to exactly the same patch version on Windows and Mac, and now I can connect with Unity running on Mac OS to the Windows Phone and profile it.
Any luck profiling the game? Did you figure out your performance issue?
