There are some incredible assets on the Unity asset store right now for medieval/fantasy world-builders, allowing developers to very quickly create their own worlds for their RPGs, Hack’n’slash, and Adventure games. If you’re like me, however, you’ll find that many of these kits are severely limiting in their architectural scope.
I’d like to share my current asset project, born from developing my own Adventure game in a medieval world. In order to create more interesting and immersive cities and villages I started creating my own assets, following a hand-painted, stylized design. I’m now in the process of making these assets more accessible for other developers by creating an array of city-building prefabs for unique buildings and styles, and I’d like to sort-of “test the waters” to see if there would be any interest in an asset package like this.
Here’s a quick preview of a house made using the kit, so you can see the style I’m shooting for. Please let me know what you think!
I think it’s a great idea to share tools with other developer’s. I think its helps in creativity to have access to as many tools as possible to help the flow or your work. Great job.
Great work!
I really, REALLY love the roof. It looks very handpainted, a bit asymetrical, a bit “fable” -ish. The worn shingles and detail on ech one make it really interesting.
The bottom half looks less distinct to me. The plaster looks handpainted, but i guess because of the roof and because i connote handpainted with kind of rough hewn and offbeat, the beams seem a bit too straight/rectangle to me.
I mention this because if i did buy it as an asset (I buy a lot of assets - thank you asset store) i would be looking for something different stylistically, more like the roof, more dramatically different.
What’s nice is that your work is towards different but it looks like a high quality asset.
One more things, i admit to being lazy - i like my houses prebuilt and have avoided things that make me build up assets just to get a home. Now, that’s just my preference - it doesnt mean other people wont love the modularity, but if there’s a way to sell the modularity not only as a powerful customization but as simple to put together, make it appeal to people like me i think it would sell even more.
There are never enough fantasy assets
In my opinion, you should make the buildings modular…but not very modular. Imagine that most people spend as little time as possible with level design. This is not absolutely a good / bad thing. Just saying that this is the trend.
So bottom line, I would try to make the modules, not very small.
