hello,
i have a object, which i have modeled exact the way i would need to have a part of a terrain. infact it is a profile view from a technical drawing of a hill extruded. what i need is that profile beeing part of the terrain and then on its edges just continue with random other terrain flow.
are there any tools, where i could transfer a 3d object to a heightmap from top view which i could import to unity again
or are there any other ways how i could get this object to be ‘projected’ on a part of terrain?
Sounds like what you want is to convert a mesh to a “heightmap”. I seem to remember seeing a tutorial on how to do this on the BlenderArtists forums a while back. If I find it I’ll post it here, otherwise you might want to search those forums yourself.
EDIT: Found this with Google: 3D Mesh-To-Heightmap Generator download | SourceForge.net
Wow… I have wanted one of these for awhile now. I’ll have to check this out.
–edit–
i386 is the listed platform for that download… bummer for me.
I’ll hit Google for the Blender solution

the blender hint got me think a little and i managed to get it working in lightwave. if there is interrest, i could make a tutorial.
i then ran into the next problem, how to make such a image to a raw grayscale image. this is not so easy without photoshop and photoshop is a bit expensive as grayscale converter.
so i have done one for myself, just a quickshot for my own purpose, but might come handy to everyone just wanting to quick convert a bmp, jpeg, png or tga image to a unity terrain grayscale image.
you can get it from my homepage
I think you should include TIFF format amongst files you would convert.
Just sayin’.
