I’m very interested in working in the 3d game modeling industry and was hoping some Vets (or really anyone familiar with modeling for games) could help clue me in with some up-to-date info on the industry standards and share any advice. I realize that this may not be the best forum for my question, but I’ve found the Unity community to be really helpful and resourceful
My limited understanding so far is that when modeling for games the standard method is to do poly-modeling. I also understand that maps are used to texture and detail models.
Of course every experienced modeler has his or her own techniques and bag of tricks but what are some of the most common methods to game modeling in the industry today? I’ve read about edge-loop modeling and normal maps being popular (still need to read up on ?baking?)
For someone like myself who is a beginner in 3D modeling what course of action would you suggest I take to catch up to speed and waste as little time in the process. I bought 3ds Max Design 2009 and am loving its simplicity (I heard Maya is less user-friendly). I have a couple textbooks and dvds/videos on 3ds max modeling but question their techniques for today’s game modelers.
Lastly, any useful textbooks, tutorials, or resources you found helped you advance in your career would be appreciated.
