I would like to create shadows that render in front of my sprites, since my levels are built with modular sprites I cannot simply bake the shadows in the sprites.
So how can I go about creating shadows that would:
-
fit the terrain I want to give shadows to?
-
make the shadows look good like this for example?
Are you talking about character shadows or environment shadows?
Have you researched “The Making of Ori”? There are numerous talks and discussions on the subject. Mostly in the GDC vault.
This might be helpful - top 5-6 links look like solid information directly related to this question.

Yes I’ve looked at all their interviews and talks but nothing was mentioned about these shadows. I’m talking about the shadows that hide their environment props. I don’t think it has anything to do with lighting btw, it’s what hides most of the environment sprites so that the play area comes out more. Whatever’s black on the video I posted has a shadow sprite, shader or something that blackens whatever is behind it → That’s what I’m talking about.
