Creating a Skybox for a 2D game

In an effort to make a better background for this 2D space based game, I was thinking of using a skybox as a background instead of a moving plane since the camera follows the ship. The camera looks down from the Z axis at the ship.

Does this sound like a workable idea or am I missing something?

Would this give give the illusion of slow movement across the background?

it would only show a static image. You could try putting planes with different textures on in the distance at different spaces and it should work.
