Hiya guys, I’m now fully in the midst of creating my GDD for my prototype and need some ideas/suggestions on asset list creation. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate dependency graph sort of thing, I just need a way to organize all assets in a manageable manner.
Besides Alien Brain is there any other apps out there? Maybe a nice template or something in Word would be nice. Or maybe go the Excel route? Let me know
I find the idea of using software by the Softimage folks for managing a workflow to be a pretty scary concept
Very good question though… Are you talking about a really big project with lots of people, or a solo project? I think your best option might be an online solution like BaseCamp HQ or something as simple as PHPBB3 – either of which allow you to attach files to posts (and PHPBB3 is free … but BaseCamp is cheap).
I’m thinking of using PHPBB3 for project management for Project Weasel – having robust forum software that allows you to attach files to posts is amazingly flexible.
Drupal. Very good content and user mgmt functions, forums, discussions, every kind of web two dot oh thingie you can think of and a lot you haven’t. Excellent taxonomy and tagging tools. Will run on absurdly cheap lamp hosts. Some assembly required, though. Basecamp is pretty cool hosted groupware, super easy to get started and use, for a few bucks a month.
another option if I understand your request right is that you could use the soon to be released updated FBX Quicktime plugin together with something like iView Media Manager or any other quicktime compatible media cataloger. These tools would then allow you to organise, rate, etc both images, movies and fbx 3d files.
But overall sadly there doesn’t seem to be a good mac based DCC asset management software. So either you go for a PC only solution or look at an online based one.
Thx gents, I’m going the route of PHPBB3, using a forum software just seems really flexible. I mean we post in forums everyday and you have ample search features, categories, file attachment e.t.c. Seems plausible thx much
Along the same lines, have you looked at Mozilla Sunbird? It’s a free productivity / calendar / scheduling tool. I’ve only started using it, but it appears that you can “share” a calendar / to do list across a network.
Much as I hated the bloated beast that NetScape became – why not put Sunbird’s functionality into Thunderbird? I mean, email and appointments and to-dos belong together … really.
