Does anyone know where i can read up on how to set up a web service for an app?
I’m talking secure database, login, etc etc
like facebook,snapchat, tinder…
I’m not sure if i should buy a plugin like Database Control Pro
or if i should get something more low level like BestHTTP
and learn how to use GET SET type stuff to interact with a database that buy from a hosting provider.
or maybe something like this? MNF (Mobile Network Framework)
Frankly networking is a HUGE blind spot for me, if anyone could just point me in the right direction so i can make an informed decision, id really appreciate it.
Generally speaking, anything that directly accesses a database is a no no, you should use a web page that has php and that should be a gateway into your application. There’s plenty of examples of that for unity, just google a bit
oh man believe me i spent the last 40 hours researching, and right now im heavily leaning towards backend services, like gamesparks or something, but more app oriented.
I might use AWS unity plugin or microsoft azure or something. whichever is easier.
I’m not cut out to deal with backend programming, the more i research the more i hate it haha
GameSparks works great for apps as well as other games and we can do third party social logins too!
I know backend programming can be a hassle sometimes and GameSparks aims to make things as hassle free as possible for our users!
I would recommend getting in touch with our support team and describing the project you’re working on. They’d then be able to help you pick and choose what features suit you best and help if you get stuck along the way. https://support.gamesparks.net/support/home
We also have an Indie and Student programme. If you qualify you get 100,000 MAUs for free and any user other than number is only 2c each! For bigger projects we can also custom build a price plan to suit you. https://www.gamesparks.com/pricing/
But to start, we’re completely free to evaluate and prototype with no commitment to go live with us so I recommend giving us a go to see what we can do for you
I think you at Gamesparks should make some kind of “pricing matrix”, that shows really easy what the costs might be for an indie dev (thinking they qualify for that model), let´s say they have x total paying users, y average daily users at z amount of data transfer etc… I think a lot of people are fearing unpredicted costs of implementing these kind of services. What do you say?
Thank you for your suggestion JoMaHo, we have played around with pricing matrix’s in the past but discovered a lot of studios tend to need a more bespoke pricing structure. For our Indie studios who utilize our Indie & Student programme the pricing very straight forward, you get 100,000 MAU’s free each month and then pay $0.02 per MAU over the 100,000 free. So if you had 110,000 MAU’s you only pay for the 10,000 over which is roughly $200.00, if you required additional support or access to additional services (Real-time servers or private clusters) our sales team would be happy to work with you to ensure you have access to what you need at a cost that wont break the bank.
At the moment I recommend anyone with concerns about pricing gets in touch via info@gamesparks.com where they can discuss their personal needs for their game with a member of our team. However I understand the concerns you are describing and will pass on your suggestion for having some form of matrix example in place to the team.
Thank you again for your suggestion and feedback,
Clare
What works for me is WordPress. I have custom theme admin pages built for the applications that communicate just fine and has the security of WordPress API. I find when creating business apps most companies already have a website which I can easily incorporate wordpress or they already have it. Extra $$$ can be found for custom Themes + webdev + mobile app.
I know these are stated for games but they work just fine for other purposes.
